Sadly, that's the exception rather than the rule. Most times you'll get a tier 3 materia at best. If you're lucky you'll get a tier 4. Trying to get a tier 5 materia through Mutamix is like trying to spear a fish with a toothpick while suffering from caffeine jitters.

If you give him 4 tier IV's and a tier V you can't end up with anything lower than a tier IV.

Tonight, someone slipped up or didn't know and put up a Fire V for 10k. I bought it and threw it in with 4 grade IV materias.

BOOM.

Ice V.

Put that back in with more IV materias.

CUTSCENE.BOOOOOM.

ACC V :3 fpr 10k + the junk materias I had around.

You can't get tier 3 if you give him five tier 4. It'll always be tier 4 or tier 5, and convertion rates to 5 were significally buffed as stated in 3.2 patch notes.
You can get tier 3 only if you give him one tier 3 and four tier 4, it considers lowest materia as a base for conversion and possible tier upgrade.

So far my main two retainers have each done something I have never attempted, because both have brought home a Kingly Whisker...6 months between the gifts. I love my girls, they're awesome.
