I can see your point, but at least speaking from my own experience, when I joined the game I ended up getting a blind invite to some large FC, I just said hello and they were all very welcoming and friendly towards me. If I were in a newbie situation, if I were to just say hello in that chat, I'd like to think the folks in there would make me feel welcome. It's always possible they could act like a bunch of jerks, but if they can find some folks that make them feel welcome right away? It could certainly be effective in keeping them playing.
Any system can be abused, this mentor channel is no different. All they can really do is hope for the best, if the whole gathering vs combat thing in diadem taught me anything, it's that SE prefers to be as hands off as possible policing player behavior that isn't outright rude or offensive. With gray areas like this, they seem to err on the side of not getting themselves involved.

I don't really see an issue with idle conversation in the Senpai chat but spoiling the games story should definitely not be allowed and punished severely in my opinion, especially if sprouts can't decline invites to the Senpai chat.
Wait sprouts can't decline the inv to the chat? Thats a little unfair
I also think while chat is all right, something that directly spoils the plot and story shouldn't be allowed in the chat at all.
Probably a "be more careful of what you put as the reason-someone-was-kicked" than "SE is okay with random crap in the novice chat".

Clearly, the best Final Fantasy character is Locke Cole.
Glamour is TRUE ENDGAME
Wow...this makes 2 times I have agreed with you.Regardless of what some random GM tells me, the Novice chat should be reserved for...you know helping the Novice players placed into it.
The odd bit of chat is fine but when it's reduced to a glorified global chat that's another story. We as a community need to enforce proper etiquette not with random kicks but with social awareness.
That said. I think SE needs to go back to drawing board with mentors.
They should be done Ala The Everquest Guide system.
Player applies, player gets reviewed, accepted or not accepted.
The current system is broken.
Oh boy, is this Twitch-chat Mod Power-trip syndrome occurring in real time? Sweet!
