The situation is sad, honestly. I actually like the track, and would have pointed me into listening to more of Powerman 5000 - except now it sounds likes this is going to be a petty bicker of copyrights (which, honestly, would lose in court against SE.) rather than Powerman 5000 being flattered by the homage.

Worst case scenario would be Soken being held accountable as well as FFXIV losing funding to pay for the cost of the dispute. Hopefully it will be settled without any major problems - because this could be very damaging to the game's reputation if people exploit it as a means to bash the game.

It's funny because literally the first thing I said when doing the fight for the first time is "Is that Powerman 5000?" I like the track, but I also liked "Worlds Collide" back in the day so it's no wonder why. Wouldn't be surprised if Powerman 5000 tried to do something about it... not sure if it would be as simple as cease and desist, or if SE's gonna pay em a bit for the obvious "inspiration".

There's a very thin line between homage and plagiarism, especially when credit isn't give to the one you are paying homage to. That goes double for when money is involved. >w>()

IF this does go to court and Powerman 5000/who ever owns Intellectual Properties to the "When Worlds Collide" does wins, SE could opt to keep the song but then they would have to pay royalties to continue using it, IF permission is given.

Powerman5000 bein' babies all up in here. It's pretty clearly homage, not unlike Good King Moggle Mog. This shouldn't be an issue.

I dunno about Good King Moggle Mog. Take out the lyrics and you can easily hear that it's just a remix of the FFV Moogle theme.

I completely agree here. I think honestly at this point I'm concerned about Soken as a creative person. I like him I do .. its just.. he borrows a lot.

And i'm starting to worry that maybe Square is over working him. Maybe Se could bring it some guest composers to break things up a bit. Bring a bit more diversity musically to FFXIV but also give Soken's creative side some time to recharge. I think all artist need that from time to time.

Maybe they can bring in Kumi Tanioka for some FFXI nostalgia.

While I'm not saying that Soken copied anything, homages are only tributes and flattery when given the appropriate nod to the original artist. Powerman 5000 feels he needed that nod and he didn't get it.
