It would be interesting if they at least used the same file format so the PS4 could import/export in PC-friendly format somehow. Or just have an online upload built into the game as we know they can.
    That would be lovely.

    It saves these things:
    ・HUD settings for all characters
・Hotbar and crossbar settings for all characters
    ・Gear sets for all characters
    ・Macros for all characters
・Character configuration settings for all characters
・Log filter settings for all characters
・Log text colors for all characters

Anyone on PC wanting to do this I would advise skipping the backup tool and simply setting up a dropbox account that syncs your character data folder. I do this and all my settings and hotbars are automatically synced between the various PCs I play on. This wouldn't work for consoles though.

SE did offer a tool of this nature for the initial PS3 to PS4 transition. In theory that could be re-implemented to be used as a backup/sync service as the OP wants but it would require quite a bit of space. My character data is 21MB in total now and it continues to grow as I create new armoury sets or new customisable features are implemented. That would be pretty hefty if every player stored a backup of that folder for each character they had.

This feature would tax the servers too hard. lol Well, that's what I would expect SE to reply with anyways.

"Our server hardware just can't take the astronomical demand!"

Moral of the story OP, just play PC and you won't have a problem. PC > any console system

Please cut it out. PC is equal to a console system.
Its just as easy to backup console settings if the game allows it. You just have to backup game data/character data in the menu (at least for playstation, cant comment for xbox systems)
You dont even have to have a separate program to even find the settings.

I switch from pc to ps4 all the time, yes not having macro's carried over is a pain but what annoys me most is the inventory sorting is different between the two, and you can only sort on one system. If you sort on ps4 the sorting on pc is all over the place and vice versa

As someone who plays on PS4 at home and laptop while away, I fully endorse the suggestion to be able to upload/download settings to the server (ala FFXI)

But to do that with your hotbars and gearsets isn't very user friendly because the game doesn't do anything to identify which character file is which—they're identified by a string of numbers, and if you have multiple characters, it can take a bit of sleuthing to figure out which is which.
Yeah >.< That was a pain. I started out by adding a txt file in each folder, the first time after going through the log files until I found someone talking to me (player or NPC) and mentioning my name, subsequent times after I created the character (or logged in on a new/wiped system), named "! CharacterName.txt" (the exclamation mark to ensure the file is at the top of the file list).

Later, I started using shortcuts. Not the usual ones, but the special ones you need a command prompt to create (found the instructions on reddit somewhere, should be possible to google it up). Have a subfolder in my FF settings named "characters", and folders in there named what the character is called. The advantage is that it's easier to see at a glance which folder you need to copy stuff from (if you're an altoholic like me, it's the easiest way to keep the same HUD settings -- just copy everything apart from gearset.dat). The downside is that you need to re-do those shortcuts whenever you reinstall or start on a new system.

I'd use dropbox (or similar) to sync my two gaming computers, if it wasn't due to the two having different keyboards ^^; On my desktop, I have a keyboard with macro buttons that I use (especially the thumb buttons below the space bar), but I don't have those on my laptop, so sadly I can't just copy stuff over entirely when moving between the two. I also can't do more advanced things when I play on my laptop, due to having one less hotbar due to those missing thumb buttons.

You have to get the client installed on the machines somehow! Of course, if you had some other way of getting the client installed, such as borrowing from a friend, then yeah, you didn't need to pay for more than one copy. It's true, though, that FFXIV is different in that having the client is not enough on its own, and you have to register on each type of system (which requires buying a copy of each - no more borrowing from a friend!).

You're absolutely right, though, in that FFXIV is SORELY in need of server-side uploading and downloading of macros and settings, much like FFXI had. Trying to keep two systems in sync, updating one every time you update the other, is maddening!
With FFXI, you didn't need an authorized copy of the game for that platform, you only needed your account, which only needed *one* copy of the game to get. The other platforms could be installed from used/other people's media and used with the account you had. Can't do that in FFXIV; your account has to be authorized to that platform and you'll need an authorization code from a copy of the game for that platform to do it.
