I think ninja is fine honestly. I would rather have one in my party than a drg/mnk melee composition but that's just me. Aoelian doesn't really need it's positional taken away. Its fairly easy to consistently hit.

The potency difference when soloing a mob isn't going to make you or break you. Likewise on smaller enemies you can literally run thru them and hit the button to proc the bonus. This is something we used to do on dragoon a bunch when impulse drive had the back positional requirement. I mained ninja from release until about half way thru alex savage. Ninja is more than capable of keeping up, but more important is the actual skill of the player than the job itself. The job is an empty potential, the player skill makes that potential an actual.

If you're soloing a mob, you shouldn't be touching Aeolian Edge anyway since Dancing Edge has the highest potency when facing an opponent
