I'm pulling for beastmaster tank, with a big tanky pet and positionals on your character for hate transfers.
Well in my head the mechanics of having heals, buff spells, even some damage spells lends itself to an aggressive mage tank style. That's all very opinion driven on my part and I get you look at it differently. If it had to be designed I would rather see it that way. I just think there are gonna be alot of people upset if they have to shove RDM into a single role.Oh...well that's a different situation then
Problem is, most people think it will be there thanks to the last teasing. And starting from this hypothesis, they try to guess what it could be.
The "I guess it will be a tank...not, it must be a tank" is the part that confused me.
Now, that being said it would be interesting if they gave it a way to change roles and maybe allowed it to play 2 roles. Maybe by giving extra DPS to abilities when in DPS role or giving enmity building when in the tank role. Would also have to change its cross classes based on role. This is fully a pipedream though and I have no expectations that a system like this would be used. It would be a bit unfair to those that level multiple jobs.
(still would require different gear sets)
I'd get behind that...
( /hides in fetal position behind giant bear pet while healers yell at me to move the boss)
Jokes aside though, even Beastmaster I'd want to have a ton of choices, based on your pet. I'd be cool with the majority of them being MT/OT/tankish-utility optimal, but I'd still like at least one pet possibility not in that category.
It's actually pretty obvious considering the tight restrictions of this game. No, it's not.
What is obvious, though, is that, in this list, there is no proper mitigation tool.
Still the one thing that makes a tank, and still the one thing RDM never specifically had.
You mean the plethora of protective white magic spells that it always had and that it could equip shields?
I guess those aren't defensive anymore. Are you so dead set against this because a mage can't be defensive in nature?
RDM has always had vast amounts of defensive based magic in addition to offense, and I'm not even talking about XI.
If we wanna go more classic RDM... then just take swordsman out. They could equip very little in the way of swords until the remakes anyway. The RDM fencer that everyone loves was a product of remakes and FFXI. If we are taking that into the equation then RDM was a defensive juggernaut with huge amounts of defensive ability that could easily be used to make them tanklike.
Not being sarcastic here, an honest question. This is playstyle aside as I'd rather see a Beastmaster tank anyway.

To be completely honest, RDM in past games could be anything, I used to have a RDM instead of a WHM, because it could heal just as well. People need to get in their heads that tanking wasn't a thing ever, and the closest abilities that made something "tanky", was Cover and Provoke, because they actually diverted an enemy's attack in some way or another, which is the primary role of a tank. You mean the plethora of protective white magic spells that it always had and that it could equip shields?

Like I said before, I don't mind what role they use for RDM as long as it feels like a RDM, but given the nature of this game, I think exactly like you. I gave up on this battle and I'm exclusively talking to you about this matter, knowing what's coming next.
Also, a BST tank could be amazing, it's been on my mind for way too long.
Yeah thats been my point the whole time, is that it could be a tank, and just in my own head that works for this game. I'm not discounting the fact that it could literally be anything though. If they wanted to do it true to form then you'd have to have some kind of choice as to what role you built it for, maybe by enhancing certain abilities to do different things (extra enmity, regen effects, more damage, status effects, etc.).To be completely honest, RDM in past games could be anything, I used to have a RDM instead of a WHM, because it could heal just as well. I've said in most of my posts before this one that I, personally, feel that RDM would be lacking in its glory, as a class, in this game. I feel like it should be a NPC or boss that has those abilities and that the WoL shouldn't even be able to take it up.
I've always compared RDM to cleric in pencil and paper dungeons and dragons. It's a class that was strong in something when it was built toward that goal. Clerics can be strong healers, damage dealers, and melee fighters. To do so they have to cast their spells to gear themselves toward that purpose. Spells are a RDM's strength and you have to balance the time casting with how your using the class actively. It's that balance that makes the class challenging and fun, but how do you apply a concept like that to a game that pigeonholes a class into a particular role. It's that question that has me, and others, flummoxed. If you put a class like RDM into a role... then you've already defeated the spirit of the class.
also... BST tank... SE this needs to happen.

i wish SE would drop hints as too what jobs they are actually working on...but we'd have to wait till fanfest. Also Beast Master does sound nice, what weapons would they use though?
