Honestly, it's all about efficiency and rewards vs time spent for so many players. Why can't people just play the game for the freaking hell of it to have fun, and see the rewards as bonuses that are acquired along the way?
Because people like progression or at least the ability to work towards something that they can get. I wanted the Fenrir mount, so I was willing to play the games to get it. Doing things for funsies will only go so far until people will grow bored and complain that there's nothing to do. FF14 isn't going to sell itself on doing things for funsies only.

Heck, Final Fantasy in general has mini games that reward you greatly if you manage to master them and it helps you out in the main game. FF7's Gold Saucer had a lot of neat items, including Cloud's Limit break, that were locked behind it. FF8 had Triple Triad that became the source of magic crafting. FF10 had Blitzball where you had to play it if you wanted to get Wakka's best weapon. Yes, people can and will play those mini games for fun, but not everyone is going to be sold on just fun alone. It's why we have so many carrot and sticks in this game and others.

I'm sure that is true for a lot of players, but I am also sure that there are a lot of people who sunk hundreds, if not thousands of hours into previous FF games because of the minigames. I spent countless hours messing around in Xenosaga with it's minigames. Just as there are players for whom everything is about measurable progression (sounds a bit like a treadmill....but that's my opinion only). There are also players who play for fun, to play around with glamours, run a few dungeons, or FATE, craft a bit, play some games at the Saucer, play around with looks with the Aesthetician, experience the story; they want to 'live' in Eorzea for a time to relax and escape the real world and it's stress and progression treadmill.

I know, but the issue I have with the mini games here is they lack depth. They are simple to a fault; Chocobo Racing only has 3 courses for a paltry amount of Chocobo EXP and MGP. Triple Triad is only for the sake of getting more cards and you can't do anything with the cards outside of the game. There has to be more to the games, rewards or not, to get me interested. The mini games in the previous titles had more going for them.

I already taken in the sights of the game's world, read the lores, leveled up a few classes, done whatever I found fun. I can only be immersed by the game's ins and outs so many times until I seen it all and it becomes a routine.
