    The subgenre is actually fairly old. The urexample of "transported to another world and get cheat powers" is pretty much Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars (1913/1917). A more modern but still old example would be the Joel Rosenburg's Guardians of the Flame series (The Sleeping Dragon was published in 1983) where a bunch of college students are teleported into a D&Desque fantasy world in their characters' bodies.

    The genre has gotten big in Japan mainly because of their desire to escape from the confines of Japanese society and have their own sense of agency and independence.
