EWWW MUMBLE then you call yourself a raider? Have consideration for your friends, and consider that not everyone have your internet. Eww...Mumble...even the name is cheap. It is the worse on MS ever. High ping all day long.Or I can keep using Mumble, which we've been using for two years and works just as well for what we need it for - voice chat.
The only real advantage of Discord is a shiny text chat interface. If I'm going to communicate via text chat, I'll do it in game.
That feel when people start getting elitist over what VoIP you use, though. xD

lol @ getting called out on whether or not I'm a "real raider" by someone wearing Prototype and Void Ark gear.
Does not matter the voice program you use it the worse. So swallow the truth and smile, now carry on. So if you want to start a calling out game, I'd be happy to start one!
I think ultimately it boils down to choice. FFXIV does a very good job of making mechanics approachable and understandable, and at making it so that if you're dying for some reason or another, with some individual examination, you'll be able to figure it out.
I personally prefer to be talking with my friends when I'm raiding, and find raid leading to be a simpler task with Ventrilo, Mumble, or TeamSpeak than typing everything into chat. But there are groups that are able to get through the content just fine without it, and that's okay, too. And there are groups that somehow sustain a mix of both - and that's also okay. So long as everyone is included and no one feels left out, there's nothing wrong with any of them.
Pshhhhh, everyone knows REAL raiders use Ventrilo. LRN2PLY n00b

Discord voice quality is terrible. It's like Skype but somehow worse in every way.
Even the text interface is mostly useless information and awful to look at.
Edit: They should probably disable voice features until they stop making a Microsoft product look like a desirable alternative. What do you think?

My life while tanking is an existential hell from which there is no escape.

See, this is how I felt about it too. It's a bunch of superfluous crap I'm not even going to use anyway. I much prefer the minimalist interfaces on Mumble, TS, and Ventrilo. I mean, my voice chat program is something that I really only look at when I want to see who has an open mic or who linked something in the chat box or to mute before I go afk or log out before I go to bed. The majority of the time it just runs quietly in the background and the only interaction I have with it is hitting my push to talk button.
