Not quite sure you understand. We have 1 challenging way to get the gear. And other time or rng based ways. If we have 2 challenging ways to get the same gear, people will just to the one less challenging and the other becomes "DoA". That's why the gear levels from the primals are distinct from the raids. It's more balanced when the acquisition methods are not related and instead have other factors to balance them (such as time to obtain).

That was also a patch after the gear cap was 90 and myth gave max ilvl gear and they released 3 fights at once. After that point (2.1) primals only dropped stuff below cap (that being ramuh an shiva, since levi didn't drop anything). I wouldn't count a one-off thing they did at the beginning and then renege for every primal after as the rule. In fact, ultimate weapon and LoTA dropped 80 gear and it actually felt out of place that the 3 remaining missing 80 gear dropped from the primals (earrings, second ring, and bracelet) were 90 instead of 80. It was probably a mistake they caught too late and just bothered to roll with it, seeing as their future pattern supports this.

I agree. I also agree with hard to find motivation to get the gear knowing its gonna be nerfed and obsolete so fast. They need to put some horizontal in here. What they did in 1.x was perfect. We didnt have ilvl and we could use diff melded gear sets for diff fights and so forth. It wasn't 100% vertical and it wasn't 100% horizontal, it was a perfect mix, to me anyway.

This is why I think player motivation is a bigger problem than difficulty. The short lifespan of gear just makes it not worth it.

I gave you a thumbs up, but... there was no live letter yesterday. Do you mean the interview that was posted? It's dated back to November. There was also a live letter digest, which was just the cliffs notes version of the live letter from a couple of weeks ago.

More horizontal game play. What do I have to show for playing since 1.0 release? Well, I have a tattoo, a legacy chocobo, my 'relic' condensed into 18 crystals + 80 tokens and 16 HQ crafted items, and my gear went through a treadmill. Game needs long time achievements, relic needs to be horizontal.

He means the one that they posted the official "digest" for, most likely. All of the information in it has been available for a couple weeks now, since they always live blog the questions/answers, though.
