We picked a city when we started.I know... Im not arguing against your point... and I'm not gonna argue the perception of freedom versus truly being free
I'm just saying what some people considered being pigeonholed, others would call structure. In Super Mario Brothers on NES, Mario was pigeonholed into running in one direction (right ->)
But I do understand the need for some control over our gameplay... But I just think having us making a choice (in a company) and having us be accountable for and reap the benefits of that choice doesn't have to be a bad thing...
It all just depends on your perspective
One year later a city I did not choose nor pledge to has my main classes weapons in their shop.
My perspective is fuck that.

Hahaha... At least we aren't bound to the company for the city we initially chose..... that would be interesting, to say the least

Because having to instantly teleport to another city and get their leves is such a hassel.
Also, if you feel pidgeonholed by GC I really don't know what to tell you since they have almost no impact on classes.

I'm a gladiator, too.
I'm picking Gridania's company because I like Gridania.
You do realise that there will be better gear available in the form of AFs or something similar which most likely won't be obtained through the GCs.
GC gear will most likely just be similar to city gears from XI, where a lot of the equipment will be weaker than those you will find through quests or dungeons.

I'm a Marauder and I'm residing in Ul'dah. Your choice =)
You're not pidgeonholed, since you can move wherever you want and do things wherever you want.

I was secretly hoping this was about the new "No, I am Sparticus" ability that causes massive enmity when used against imperials.
Sometimes you have to pretend like some parts of the quests never happened. Like a marauder being apirate. I don't want to be a pirate, but I want the intimidation trait. I just think of a happier place and close my eyes when I have to do those kinds of quests

Not really. Sure so far the Gladiator gear has been released in that company but it's not like it's 100% the best gear in the game ever. I wouldn't worry yourself too much about company gear rewards. Join the company you like best, have fun with the game.

At the end of the day, I'd say choose whatever company you like based on whatever reasons fit you... if you just like a certain zone... like the lore from that city... If you think the city your guild is in would be a better choice...
Just don't be afraid of making a bad decision...
Our society is built on bad decisions... Hell.. half of us would have never been born if it wasn't for bad decisions...
Embrace the unknown... welcome the adventure....
Manifest Destiny and all that jazz
