Tanks don't need to have all the same aoe potential.
It didn't get through anything apart from OT single-target "fine", though. It's only advantage as MT was more at-the-ready mitigation tools than WAR, and a faintly higher heal efficiency. Dungeon tanking was a Warrior's game. Dealing significant damage as MT was the Warrior's thing.But why does PLD need aoe dps? They've since given Warrior further AoE dps, DRK heavy AoE dps, and left PLD with only CoS. We generally expect these gaps to close with future developments and increased options, not widen due to negligence.
