    Thoughts?
Cosplay is just cosplaying as XXX.

Fan-Fiction is a fictional story based on XXX, and disrespectful unless the author approves of it, or asks someone to write for it or gives licenses.

Role-play is playing a role with a character you created based on a story someone else made. However, unless the story maker gives you a "role" then you should make your own character within the story. Most Role plays and theators are people being given a role, like shakespear. He intended for the story to be told that way in theators. Most roleplayers actually participate in cooporative story telling, or playing a role which they created themselves and players who roleplay as famous characters or characters other people made are ignored and or not taken seriously.

Fanon, see bronies. Some times it can have negative and positive feedbacks.

I'm sick and going to a funeral now, see ya all later.

So according to you, it's disrespectful to name my cat after a cartoon character? Because my cat isn't actually that character, and that character isn't a cat? Same goes for a kid, people name their kids after tv shows or movies all the time. Is that disrespectful? (I wouldn't personally name my kid after a cartoon.)

I'd say it's more admiration. I named my ninjas first name after a woman in a book that was a badass, strong, admirable assassin. Or sometimes I'll use a character name because I think it's pretty. Or because it matches what I want to do with my character (my bard/machinists last name is Deschain after Roland Deschain from the dark tower series by Stephen king. He's a gunslinger and I wanted to feel like I'm from his line).

I don't see how any of this is disrespectful.

Do you know what doujinshi's are? They are comics based on existing franchises that aren't made by the creator and are often not even close to source material. And they still allow those to exist. Nobody had hounded down fanfiction websites yet. Because apparently only you care. You just can't make profit using their IP's

To be fair, I do know of one author that has gone through means to stop people from writing fan fiction, and that's Anne Rice..I don't recall exactly what she's done to put a stop to it besides nicely ask her fans to stop and state that she's very against it. I'm sure there are others, but I feel video game characters are different than fanfiction, although I'm not opposed to fanfiction myself.

Wow, I don't think I've EVER seen anyone so opposed to fanworks, and this is the internet, so I was pretty sure I've seen everything already...

Look, I'm as annoyed as anyone on seeing the 500th Rinoa and Cloud pop up on my server, but I'll also defend them to the death for their roleplaying as a character they love, or cosplaying as that character or writing stories about them or drawing fanart/doujins about them. If you consider it disrespectful, fine, do so. Except for a small handful of people, close to all artists are flattered that others get so absorbed in their works.

I'm sure there are a few exceptions to the rule. Nintendo often attacks fan stuff too. Not everyone is the same the majority don't feel it's "disrespectful" if we made a list of creators and divided them by who finds it honorable or disrespectful. More people find it a honor that people like their creations so much

Websites to upload fanworks to often have lists of artists who do not want fanworks to be created about their work(s).
It's especially funny if someone can be found on the list who got rich by writing a fanfiction herself..

First of all, I have to say it feels a little bit weird to find something I actually agree with you on, Nektulos ^^; A lot of what I've seen you post has to me felt quite a bit over-the-top, but... I agree with you when it comes to using canon character names for what's essentially RP (even if you're not RP-ing in FFXIV). On RP forums (where the entire forum is a single RP for one fandom), I'm equally uncomfortable with having players control canon characters, and prefer them (if they are necessary) to be NPCs, controlled by the admin/mod staff.

When it comes to fan-fiction, there is a list (it's been a while since I wrote any fanfiction, so I've lost track of where it is, but most fanfiction archives tend to either link to it or keep a copy of it on their own servers) of which western-based authors allow, grudgingly accept and refuse fanworks of their property. It's up to the fans to respect the author's wish in the matter, and stop writing stuff. (Or at least keep it private and offline, where only you can access it.)

Yes, doujinshis exist, and are (AFAIK) accepted by mangaka. But I'm fairly certain that if a specific mangaka or manga publisher said "No, stop making doujinshi of this particular manga/anime", the fans would be expected to respect that statement. Similar to how Yoshi-P and the other devs say, "Yes, we're aware of this problem, please do not exploit it," and expect us to respect that wish. And while that might be a futile expectation when it's an international game, it's probably not as futile when the people you're addressing are Japanese (which the majority of doujinshika are, AFAIK).

*cough* Yes, Anne Rice is very firm with her, "No, do not create fan-based works," stand. She is, however, not the "worst" one, in my opinion. That would be Anne McCaffrey. She's also made a very firm, "No fan works!" statement, but... there was an artist who'd made... I think it was an oil painting, mostly landscape, but featuring a dragon and dragon-rider. Basically professional-quality fan-art based on the Dragonriders of Pern. McCaffrey disapproved, and took legal action, with the end result that the artist got a court order (I think it's called) forcing them to destroy the painting, and delete all digital representations of it they had control over.
And while I respect that McCaffrey does own her works, and agree that the artist should have respected that as well, the thought of destroying something that had taken days or more to create... Ouch is just the first word that comes to mind. The second being a "Nooooooo!" to rival Luke Skywalker's.

But in all seriousness. Its extremely disrespectful to a character you didn't create to use the name of.
It's extremely disrespectfull to women to have "professional princess saver" in your sig. Modern day feminists and social justice warriors would gang up on you and get you fired from your job for promoting inequality!
