True, but to be fair, FF already has plenty of precedents for bringing in references to other media simply because a developer likes it. (E.g. There's a reason we have characters named Biggs and Wedge in most of the FF games.) If they can bring in names from outside sources, they could probably bring in a stance as well.

Those are pretty old references though and considering the other stances are based on Final Fantasy Characters I would expect no less from the Dark knight Pose.

The entire discussion is academic, as whatever the "actual" source, most people familiar with it assume it's Saber's trademark pose. Memetics > Truth.

At any rate, statues of knights with broadswords have used this pose for a thousand years, as it's one of the few comfortable ways to pose with one for any length of time.

why not having the same or different weapon pose for all races, both genders and for all the classes ?

Female MNK, NIN, ACN'SMN'SCH, PLD among others I haven't checked yet, looks really cool. it's almost unfair T_T

Actually, I think this might be lore related, at least FF lore in general. This piqued my interest now I am curious which past character each pose is modeled after. Like maybe the female Ninja is modeled after Rikku from X-2, or maybe the female Dark Knight is more from the Judge of Wings, like someone memntioned earlier. I can only really guess at the male poses, but maybe the male ninja is Zidane from IX. Machinist could either be Vincent or Irvine. As for DRK though I think the pose is more from Auran from X not Cloud, though neither of them wield an Axe and both poses are similar. I hope everyone speculates more this is actually an interesting topic.

Thing is, Balthier doesn't hold his weapon like that. He holds it over his shoulder. Vincent's pose is far more similar than Balthier's. A quick search will show you the poses. I believe the bow one is in XII as well though, for male characters. But me or someone else should check out the victory pose videos that are on youtube.

Possible WAR reference though.
I suggest you check out these victory pose videos to draw connections with, as Ashe seems to be standing as a Male healer in FFXIV. But that might just be me.
