    I am glad Yoshida has the sense to go in the opposite direction of FFXI in terms of absurd time sinks. You should either go back to it or let it go.

    Note: Content in Final Fantasy XI lasted so long not because it was difficult or challenging, but because of the absurd drop rates, the time wasting game mechanics, etc. That only served to mount tension and enmity between players and Linkshells because of the absurd time it took to get anything worthwhile.

    Games should not rely on time sinks to retain players. Each day it passes I am more convinced the worst enemy FFXIV has, second only to Square-enix himself, is FFXI players that are still stuck in an era of gaming that is no longer realistic or feasible.

    I'd argue that most of it was just the act of finding people with which to do the events. Some items did have absurd drop rates, though mostly it seemed like the drop rates were poor when compared to the recurrence of the event in question divided by the number of people needed to do an event who also wanted the same item.

    It's been my experience that the truly exceptional items in any MMO have pretty defunct drop rates. That wasn't something SE had a monopoly on.

    If the desire for the item was great enough, though, it kept bringing people back.

    I would believe is the other way around. If you want to slave yourself to a game wasting hours of your life (which you are free to do) go back to XI.

    That is exactly what you had to do in XI if you wanted to get anywhere or be anyone with amazing gear, be in a LS or several LS's with a very strict weekly schedule, Monday/dynamis, Tuesday/Limbus/Salvage, wednesday/Sky, Thursday/Sea, Friday/Dynamis, Saturday/Skypopfarming, Sunday/Meritxpparties, If you miss any of those days, you would punch yourself knowing how that other member now has more points than you to claim the Item your looking for once it drops... Because of low drop rates the game forced you to be there every week, every day on those events if you wanted something, just like a job.

    Since when does being at the mercy of the random number generator equate to hard work? People don't mind work, what they don't want are blatant time sinks that only serve to waste your time.

    No longer realistic... or feasible? Speak for yourself! Perhaps you grew up and got a life, but we haven't.

    Seriously, I think everybody changes, and perhaps the generation that had time to spare when it wasn't doing their homework and was too pimply to get good sex, is now married, with children and awesome credit card debt. That doesn't mean there aren't others that have, or choose to steal, the time to devote to gaming. This whole idea that "things" have changed so much that a game that was practically adored two years ago has suddenly become untenable is ridiculous.

    If XI stands depleted of its former population nowadays, it's because of the "Casualization" it underwent, not because its level of complexity had suddenly become poisonous, or because "the matrix" suddenly entered a singularity that made time scarcer, and life more (or less) fun. You just got older, but look back, and forward, there all those other still willing to play for hours.

    This guy speaks the truth

    Srsly... if u loved FFXI .. go and play it.

    LEARN SOME MATH!

    11 =/= 14

    If u want to play 11, go and play 11....

    Dont bring here ur silly argument about "grinding is fun".
    I have fun when I experience a dynamic experience... and not when im spaming buttons... if u want to spam buttons then go and play something else.
