Housing itself is more of a socialization thing rather than what you think.
It is your personalized space where you can invite your friends to. Or a place to escape the RTM.

I think it depends on the area and the people, my FC has a house in a fairly active ward with a few other fc's nearby who use the same market board, so we interact with each other regularly and sometimes form groups and do content together.

I can agree the wards need work.
Personally, I'm easily distracted with other people around while trying to craft, so I generally do it at my house or boyfriend's house or friend's house. Especially if it's anything risky/expensive where hitting the wrong button is costly. Housing is one of the few things about the game that has kept me playing. I mean sure, it's a novelty thing, but I feel a bit more attached to my character and the world around me as a result.
To OP: When I first got my house early this year, some of my neighbors came and brought food as house-warming gifts and welcomed me to the neighborhood and talked with me for a while. Things have died down a lot since then in my neighborhood, but some wards are definitely more active than others.

I spend about 80% of my online time in housing wards, only interrupted by brief instances and teleports to buy new tomestone stuff.
About half of my active circle of friends ingame are people I have met there. We had a great neighbourhood in the Mist, despite some abandoned plots, several active FCs and a few personal houses were around. We all met up at the market board each day, exchanging rumors, news and opinions. We danced for each other, gave fashion tips and dumped the stuff retainers brought us on each other. Sometimes we made plans to try and beat Alex Savage with "the neighbourhood alliance"
When someone new moved in, we immediately went to welcome - and annoy - him, making him a part of that neighbourhood too^^
I moved to Lavender Beds today and wonder if I'll have that kind of experience as well. But yeah, the open wards make housing super social IF YOU WANT IT TO BE that way.

My house is open to all, so obviously I'd never tell anyone to "get out" or "go away", but...there's a reason I chose that plot in Lavender Beds in the top left corner that is a full Sprint distance away from the nearest other houses and MB. Not interested in peoples' crafting spam and random chatter, sorry.

There's waaaaaaay more items available from the vendor inside a house than from the ones in Limsa Lominsa.
Same. I hate when people camp on me and spam Holy or Mudras and other crap like that. Very distracting.
