It's this way for the Mac client, the Steam client, PC client, and also the PS3 and PS4 clients. XI was the same iirc.

With FFXI you never had to buy the game more then once. Example...one time my graphics card died and while I waited for a week for the replacement I played on my brothers PS2, did not need to rebuy anything. Game was already installed...just logged in and played. You never needed to buy more then one key for FFXI...

You did if you went PC -> Xbox though. Or PC ---> PS2 or PS2 --> Xbox. Just not if you went Xbox --> PC or PS2 --> PC. (Rather, you had to have the physical disks to install and play the games on those platforms.)

SE basically granted a blanket PC license to anyone who had the PS2 or Xbox license on their accounts. They opted not to do that with XIV.
