Because for starters, the Garleans still have their normal sight.

As for the magic. I think the Garleans cannot use Aether like the other races because they do not have as much aether as the other races. They know how it works and how to artificlay produce it to power their machines, but they do not have enought for even a simple teleport spell

Thancred's case is similar, the trip thought the Lifesteam did drain him of all his aether to the point where he has as much as a Garlean and it is unlikely that he'll even regain that lost aether again.

Also I think Minfilia might have sabotaged the spell, causing it to spare Y'sholta's aether but take away her sight as the "toll" through the lifesteam.

I seem to be getting a completely different vibe from the story from nearly everyone else.

Thancred managed to physically reform after being spirited farther away than Y'shtola and seemingly without any external aid. He can't use aether because of his trip through the lifestream; however, he may have heard Y'shtola's comment about seeing the Warrior of Darkness' (WoD) unusual aether. Knowing that Y'shtola is actively viewing aether, what if he is capable of using aether, but just hiding it? Before the WoD and party retreated, did his comments to Thancred suggest that the two met before? None of this means anything, unless Thancred was possessed by an Ascian! Again! Okay, maybe not.

As for Y'sh, I'm not so much under the impression that Matoya will sacrfice herself to save Y'shtola. I sense that Y'sh will eventually start consuming babies to gain their vital essence and extend her life. She'll justify it in claiming that her sight into the aether has made her aware of a threat that no one else can comprehend, and she must extend her life at all costs to vanquish that threat. Then she will be the main "villain" of the next story arc.

I don't think of it being something that is just ignored about her but something she learns to adapt to. I do think Matoya will eventually sacrifice herself in some way for Y'shtola. Doing the broom quests for Matoya is an interesting glimpse into the woman. She is an old woman who is pretty much just waiting to die now. The while she holds a lot of love for knowledge and her belongings, the thing that gives her the most joy, the thing that is most precious to her, is Y'shtola.

We do see our former allies weakened but I think that is a step that will lead to their growth. Y'shtola has lost her sight but her mastery of Aether has increased considerably. Thancred can no longer cast magic but its something that creates drive for him to explore other options to adapt like Magiteck. Lets remember Thancred's loss is something Cid has managed with since he was born.

Its in the face of adversity that we can have greatest growth. Also as I said before it shows that our fight has a cost. Its not going to just be alright. We will lose things and have tough choices. Its what makes the hero.

I do have to wonder though, what if all of Thancreds aether went to Y'shtola? I'd like to think that it would explain her power boost.

I don't really think Minfilia would know how to tamper with Y'shtola's magics in such a specific way. Y'shtola cast a forbidden spell out of desperation and attempting to mess with it at all could have completely unforeseeable (and disastrous) consequences.

Minfilia may have the Echo, but ultimately she's a bureaucrat, not a mage.

    Platitudes. I'm not convinced.

There are ways to handle it that I would be okay with, conditionally, but the price tags thus far have been fairly arbitrary, and the people paying them either die smiling utterly assured of the merits of their sacrifice, or suffer in silence knowing their pain is meaningless before the suffering of the masses. It would be one thing if they had the character foundation to support that, but most characters seem to go from 0 to Jesus in 60 seconds, and with appallingly few exceptions, the people around them accept and laud their suffering without much of a second thought.

I don't like being the hero who serves an abstract, faceless good at the expense of the people around me (and not myself). It's not what I signed up for. Not in Final Fantasy.

I have to Vehemently disagree. Growth through loss is something that can be done very well, such as Toph in Last Airbender being blind, and becoming a master bender because of that, it was built in as part of her character design. Thats not what we have here, what we basically have is akin to someone losing both their legs, being put in a wheelchair, and them using fatal practices to make that chair move quickly, all the while NOBODY even mentions it. Sure such a person has a wheelchair to be able to move about, heck they might even be able to move faster than they could normally run, but they are still very much CRIPPLED.

If the WoL needs to face challenges and pain to grow, make them something thats either targeted at US, or at least have us, if nothing else, REACT to whats happening to the people we hold dear, none of which is going on.

We all know SE will shoehorn in a quest line to "save Y'shtola" yet again. They'll find someway to fix her. Though I don't personally feel inclined to do so. >_>
