I think they did it wrong though, they should have adopted a system that kept all the original areas at lvl 75 or below
abyssea should have been a lvl 71+ area from the getgo. it was a mistake even Tanaka appologized for allowing lvl 30 players in there but did nothing to correct it because he feared too many people would leave.

I couldn't do the whole leech level thing. I have too much pride in my accomplishments to do it.

I still have trouble letting go of FFXI but really I would rather they bring different elements from FFXI to FFXIV.
I would love to see them bring in a version of Besieged in an area of say Ishgard that could be instanced like it is in FFXI but stay in the open world. yes that's right Besieged closed off Alzahbi into an instance so you could enter if it was not full but not if it was.

Not forgetting beseiged affected whitegate itself with npcs being captured, then you could go rescue them \o/ deep within beasts lairs

People got so pissed when we lost sanction XD

If they did bring it here tho, I predict you could get the good Samaritan title in 1 sitting

Oh man, I would love a true Beseiged like battle.

You know how the call for Odin ripples across linkshells and FCs and you eventually gather up enough people to do it?

Besieged was much the same. We'd cram upwards of 700 people into the zone (the absolute maximum allowed) and spend 30 minutes to an hour just killing things. Depending on which NPCs were currently in the city, you got certain buffs available that refreshed every five minutes (like the Giant's potion that doubled your HP, a mega elixir to restore all HP and MP, a reraise potion, etc.) The NMs would start trickling in, and when Medusa or Gulool Ja Ja finally made an appearance, people would shout for help and you'd fight them and if you took them down it was such a feeling of accomplishment.

The objective was to protect the 5 NPC generals, who were also fighting. The generals were linked to seals that protected the Astral Candescense (we called it the astral candy) and if all 5 generals were killed, it became a last stand showdown of the mercenaries (player characters) beating back the beastman hordes within the hall of the AC. If a beastman touch the AC, they'd grab it, teleport out, and the battle was immediately over. You lost, and the AC would be gone until one of the raiding groups went out and got it back. If the hour finished without the beastman getting the AC, you won - the beasties would run home and train some more, and the city kept its buffs until the next battle. (When the AC was lost, the music in the zone disappeared. A nice touch.)

Hell no to Abyssea. The one thing that finally made me quit XI.

But if something was to bring to XIV from XI, I would like to see Besieged, Dynamis and Salvage.

The thing that lacks in this game in comparison to XI, and the one thing I miss, is really not the reward system in place, but the mechanics of the pull. Most mobs are set in far apart groups. Pulling properly in high level areas and places like sea and dynamis was an art form. Mobs were difficult enough in those areas that one had to actually understand and watch the patterns of mobs to avoid a sacrifice or a wipe.

That seems to be the big difference between the diadem and what XI dynamis was. Everyone was on the razors edge and if they didn't perform their role properly then the fallout was damaging to the times in place.

That being said I don't know how well that would work in this current system. Mobs don't have to see a pull to link, they do so automatically and so I don't know how hard it would be to recode the system to allow that in the first place. As of now mechanics of mob movements are pretty elementary.

That being said I really don't want it to become a zerg-fest, but making the trash mobs a bigger challenge with a chance of reward would be nice. Why not give a trash mob that is more difficult the chance to drop a weapon that is 10 ilvls lower than the boss of an instance, or even the chance for a rare mob to pop near the end of it. We already rely on RNG in the first place so it would just be an extension of that.

Something like Nyzul Isle Investigation would be fun too. Just short amounts of trash mobs punctuated by remixed bosses.

Noooooooo Abyssea ruined FFXI. Please dont let it destroy this game. Dont they remember the insane PLing and how the game judt fell appart with Abyssea? They had to keep going and going until the game became gods vs subjects. FFXIV needs to remain as is with original additions imo.

news flash, abyssea is not what ruined FFXI, it was many things
things that were left unfixed nomatter how much people complained made people leave
having nothing left to do made many veteran players leave and never come back
bad implimentation of the level cap raise caused people to leave.
abyssea not having a level cap of atleast 65 caused some to leave and many to complain
there were many other things that helped cause the downfall of the game.
most of you who played FFXI know that the devs barely played the game which led to frustration on the players part.

my point being it was not any one thing that caused it's downfall

One difference is that CC skills had use in XI. Bind, slow, heavy, paralyze, sleep, (also things like blind, dispel) etc. could be applied to most monsters and were really potent. I mean yeah, on trash monsters in EXP parties they weren't necessary, but using CCs and debuffs in harder fights was really useful.
