For me I joined the game already with the understanding that the role of a healer was something that I enjoyed. During 1.0 I played as a Conjurer/White Mage, but I was quick in making a switch to Scholar when that job became available. It was a job that greatly appealed to me because, for one, it was a pet job and that was something that I enjoy, but over time I also learned that I enjoyed dealing as much damage as possible while keeping everyone alive. I loved how much I could bring to the table with Scholar and since I considered it likely that Scholar would forever be the best damage dealing healer the game will ever have I foresaw that I would stay a Scholar forever.

However, I didn't anticipate Astrologian. It would seem that, more so than healing and dealing damage, I find more enjoyment with healing and buffing. And while it may be true that allowing the job to essentially play as either a White Mage or Scholar could be considered lazy design, that isn't to say that I don't enjoy that flexibility because I most certainly do. However, I won't go as far as to say I won't ever go back to Scholar. It's still a job that I enjoy very much, but I feel like I have a little more fun with Astrologian.

Up until recently, my "main" had always been whatever role my raid group required me to be, really. I was a SCH in the 2.0-.1 series, swapped to WHM because I swapped raid groups and it turns out I was 1000x better at that but was pretty dissatisfied while raiding because me and my co-healer were so good at healing that it actually became a little boring. We lost a DPS at the start of Final Coil and had an interested WHM in search of a group so I made the swap to SMN, which is what I mained until 3.0. When AST was announced, it seemed exactly like the job that could make me love healing again, and while leveling I was just in awe at how gorgeous the spell effects and animations were. Lo and behold, when Savage Alex came out and Eso tomes came out and decisions had to be made on what I would play, I went with the "safer" option of SMN, because pre-buff AST was pretty godawful. (To be frank, I'd prefer if it got a complete overhaul at this point to remove the "can be a gimpy WHM or SCH" schtick, but know that's unlikely to happen now.)

I don't raid anymore now, and I'm back to maining AST. While the job still doesn't quite feel like it knows what it wants to be, I love healing my parties and buffing in my downtime (rather than DPSing, like I would on WHM or SCH. Don't get me wrong, I still do healer DPS as AST, it's just that people are more forgiving of me doing less of it so long as I keep buffs up and watch my mana pool). I hope the job gets more features to allow us to better work with the terrible, terrible card RNG though.

I started out as a bard, because based on the play style and stats, compared to how I played in other games I thought it would be the best fit for me. I actually got to 50 and I was increasingly dissatisfied with the job, as well as the fact that there were So. MANY. BARDS. In every raid. One WoD I ran, all of the dps were bards.

I started leveling other jobs to get cross class skills that Endgame Guides indicated were really necessary to max my dps as bard. Mantra meant getting pugilist to 42, so I thought I might as well get monk; blood for blood meant getting lancer to 34, so I thought I might as well become a dragoon, and if I was going to be playing both jobs to that point I thought I might as well get marauder to 26 and get Mercy Stroke because both monk and dragoon can use it.

Since I was going to be playing marauder to 26, I deemed it necessary to get GLD to 22 to get flash and provoke, as well. I didn't enjoy low level gladiator, but once I started running marauder through the dungeons, I LOVED it.

I became a Warrior. I got my Warrior to 50. I started maining it back in May and it's been my main ever since. Tanking, especially tanking on warrior, made me excited to play the game. The combos, securing aggro, and effective use of cooldowns made sense to me in a way I never quite got the bard rotation.

When Heavensward came out I had a brief detour with dark knight, got that to 50 in a long weekend, and decided to continue maining Warrior. It was my first job to 60 and it's the job I main in my current static, though I can bring the other tanks, the heals, and some 60 dps to the table as well. Dragoon was my second job to 60 and I really enjoy it, but the rigidity of the rotation makes it not my favorite. Summoner is probably my favorite 60 dps at this point.

And bard, sadly, is the very last job I'm leveling on my way to Grandmaster of War. I don't mind Wanderers Minuet after getting used to the cast times for actual casters, but the job I started out with is now my least favorite. I'd even put it below Machinist.

Unlike a lot of tanks with epeen issues I don't mind off tanking, and Warrior is in the optimal place for that right now. It's hella fun. The best advice for picking a main is really, explore your options and find what you LOVE to play. Because at endgame you're going to playing with it a ton, and you don't want a job that is meh, or just okay, or something you're indifferent to. Main what you love.

I still don't have a main Am I the only one?
I was a Bard from 1.0 until about halfway through 2.X when I ended up losing interest in the class, and just kept losing it at 3.0. I wouldn't really consider myself as having a 'main' job. I do like BRD/AST/SCH, but don't "love" any of them enough to commit to them.
(Although saying this, deciding which relic to get when they come out is gonna be tough haha!)

I started one and never turned back because leveling is hell and I am not going through that again.

I just can't decide on one and I'm borderline on quitting out of frustration xD I really want to focus on one and raid with that but alas, I can't. I don't know what I want that's why I asked for everyone's stories/choices
