Well, another feature that can be added to FFXIV is the ability to link items into chat like many other MMO. While colors may distinguish usefulness between beginners linking two items of the same color in the LS chat for other players to see the stats directly can help "middle-game" or even "veteran" players to determine which item is better for that player to use based on stat/class/job/role setup combos.

But adding item colors is still a great idea I just feel like it can be taken a step further (maybe not now of course, but would seem like a good idea for later) and I don't mean to say we should copy other MMO for the sake of copying but I didn't feel like taking time out to "reinvent the wheel" for a feature like this, because this would be quite a difficult process to go around the most obvious solution/path for a feature like this.

Now any comments on how to take this feature a step further and we have other MMO copying this one.

Hmm.... how about the ability to turn an item from one colour to another an increase it's stats accordingly? Like some kind of advanced crafting skill.

So green sword > advanced craft success > blue sword

I haven't seen any other MMO with the ability to increase the power of an item before in this way, they usually just use enchants. If you could advanced craft something to blue AND add materia you could make a sword that'd last you 10 levels instead of 5. this would be pretty good with the 'degredation' thing Yoshi was talking about, as if i interpreted that correctly, your armour and weaponry will slowly look more beaten up as it gets older and more worn out. Making a sword that'll last you 10 levels would result in it looking pretty busted up, rusty and nasty by the time you come to get rid of it.

    That's nice, but -

There are times, especially in the case of DD and mage classes, where a lower level gear is better than the higher level gear because the lower level gear has better bonus stats that matter to the class, specifically. I guess it doesn't occur so much as to be much of an issue, but it's still important to note that "your gear is grey" does not always mean you are wearing the wrong gear.

Still, +1 to the post and thank you, Bayohne.
Probably using a console where using the keyboard is a hindrance. Other games solves the 'long name' problem by allowing a simple click on an item in one's inventory or equipped gear pastes the item's name into the chatlog, from where other players can click the name and get the tooltip for the item.

I'm sure SE have seen this, presumably there's a reason they haven't bothered doing that.

Thats true! Always forgot about that, most people deck out in at least some old gear, a lot of my current gear would be grey even though its all the best I can use.

How do they handle that sort of thing in WoW?...does WoW have bonus attributes? I don't remember from what little I played of it.

they handle with a thing called "item value" or gearscore. Basicly every item have a set number telling how good it is. Let's say, an item with 200 value will be always better of a 100, with some exceptions. On item of the same score is up to the player choosing the best

A feature much similar to this already exist in Aion. What is different there from this game is that in that game green to blue is the same level just a more powerful piece of gear.

Anyway how it works is you have a normal recipe which you make a sword with. Normally, you make a plain 'white' sword. If you HQ you make a green sword. You can then take the green sword and if you HQ you will turn it into a blue sword and if you don't it will be something like a green sword +1. You can do this till you get gold or an orange item.

A dev post said they were looking into seeing if code-wise this is currently possible but it would probably be a while before it surfaced.
