Actually if you sound enough cash in one go to another character, Blizzard's system will auto lock your account for odd activity. I know one person named TarouWoWGuides had that problem often.

Which didn't really solve much because Blizzard mostly said, "Hey these people are selling gold, but we aren't making money. That's not right, so we'll make them pay $20 for 20k (Last I checked anyways) that can't go wrong because this way it's legal."

But that's looking it from a, "We want to stop bots" issue, which wasn't actually the case due to one exact character name showing up in trade for months. They did it because their subs were dropping and it's basically a $20 sub if someone pays for it. So they're banking off of it. Remember they didn't mind the first huge drop because they didn't lose much due to the store and areas that had a sub cost increase.
