KABOOM! Baseless Head-Canons [SPOILERS]

I like to think that long ago there was a sort of "Big Bang" theory regarding FF14 Universe. That long ago there was a giant Crystal that exploded and whose shards spread. When they finally settled they eventually formed their own world with their own life-forms. Some life-forms may have abused their respective lifestream and eventually died and such a planet is where Midgardsomnr resided and eventually escaped.

Zodiark's planet was in the early stages of life when hydaelyn (accidently or purposely) crash-landed and displaced Zodiark ... leaving him shattered as we've seen. With the early stages Hydaelyn lucked out when Midgardsomnr landed in her new world and made a pact with him: in exchange for him and his kind to live there he has to do __ for her.

Silver Tear's lake is actually a giant crater where she landed, but is covered up by water, so it explains why there's so much aether in Mor Dhona.

The world of FF14 is unique in that 2 world crystals reside --and are fighting over-- the same realm. Which explains the Umbral and Astral era.
