Just gonna say that's a poor argument. FFXI is not the only FF. And besides, jobs in XIV are missing a lot of traditional attacks and mechanics and such from previous incarnations. Where's Reraise on WHM? Where's PLD's Climhazard? Why does DRK have what's basically Mind Break instead of giving it to PLD where it belongs? Why can't ROG actually steal things? ARC is a dot/oGCD class instead of having Charge?

But, yes, I would love it if they made SAM a melee magic DPS, just to mess with everyone.

I think it could work. Base it around focusing the spirit into weapons, armors and/or purely summoning a spiritual entity to cast effects on you (instead of you telling the summon what to do).

Just gonna say that's a poor argument...

While it's FF in name, a lot of has to be made in a working context in the realm of an MMO and give the job it's own identity; they'd have to work against the grain a little bit to break from how FF skills traditonally have worked, BLM is a well-executed example imo.

As for samurai, I think it could be a toggle-able stationary melee DPS that uses oGCD skills for movement (side stepping to flank/rears, or backwards), or a completely different resource (the game desperately needs to break away from TP being the only resource for physical dps, if MCH is any indicator), either using mana (similiiar but not a carbon copy of DRK) or a stacking spirit buff of sorts.
