Dont bother. Its gonna be a Tank. Every job with a sword will be a Tank. Because reasons.
So I have a new thought on samurai after playing blade and soul. I really think that it should have two different sword stances for it's attacks that it flows between in a similar concept to the mnk. A basic stance that it starts out in with the katana drawn normally and from there it transitions in to a draw stance where it holds the katana "sheathed" and does another special attack before switching to the sword being drawn and that cycle repeats based on the attacks it does.
This was another concept I loved from the 7th Dragon 2020 series. When you sheathed the blade, it gave to access to it's elemental abilities. Personally it's my favorite type of Samurai Concept. But with the way XIV is, it would either very OP or underwhelming. So I have a new thought on samurai after playing blade and soul. Yoshi said at pax it came down to the wire when deciding between Dark Knight and Samurai for the tank role. They probably have a general idea on how it will work as a tank at this point. Yoshi said the dps thing a very very long time ago. Also Yoshi (thankfully) doesn't make all the decisions, it's a team effort.
Red Mage will most likely be a sword dps and you can pretty much count on that. It would seem kind of odd that Doma has no tanks if Ninja and Samurai are both a squishy dps. Also seems kind of weird that the two far east jobs would share the same role, I mean who protects the rulers in Doma? Do they have no sturdy defenders or healers in their culture?

Honestly I would be for a double class. Yoshi P said in an interview a tank Samurai would be a Shogun. I would love in a patch to have both a Shogun and Samurai class, with similar but different weapons and similar but different rotations introduced. One would be heavier, one lighter. Perhaps one could use a Naginata, the other a Katana. Or it could be a bow+sword combo- as in weapon drops are a "set" with both a bow and sword. So many possibilties. I really (and am in the minority) like the new glamour pieces released from Rhapsodies. Big History buff- Japan from 1400s-1948, and Germany from about 1600-1945 (Prussia->NGF->Germany). Any classes that draw both from game and history I love.
They meant theme as in location. The theme of heavensward is dark and takes place in a corrupt Ishgard which is why Dark Knight fits more thematically.
A Samurai appearing out of nowhere in Ishgard during the dragonsong war would be strange but a European fantasy themed greatsword wielding avenger fits Ishgard perfectly.

"In terms of the tank role we were actually down to the wire in determining which. We had two possible choices between Dark Knight and Samurai"
When they say a statement like "two possible choices" they had to decide between the two for what would fit Heavensward more. Also such a statement like "possible choices" does mean they are considering Samurai as a tank and probably even have ideas for it. However since they only could release 3 jobs for this expansion they picked what they could for now.
If red mage is released as a dps next expansion, samurai will most likely be a tank.
