He summons a Carbuncle in Castrum Centri during 2.0's MSQ so he's an Arcanist if nothing else.

This is actually fact. It's the last moogle sidequest in Mog Home that tells it.

As for my theories, I say that Elidibus is Future/AU Us and is trying to tell Urainge the info they figured out to late last time and is secretly undermining the Black Robe Ascians at every turn even going as far as to repurpose the Warriors of Darkness from Nebraulius and Lahabrea who destroyed the world last time.

Also, the PTSD theory when combined with the Echo is almost a lore explanation for the Duty finder. PTSD + Echo means Literally re living the encounter. (But due to continuously worsening mental insanity we can never remember who exactly was with us when it happened.)
