To be fair, FFXI's races were more diverse to the point where I'm sure most were fine with it (though if you wanted to change appearance, there was always the costumes). Hume's were humans, Elvaans were elves, Tarutaru's were onions (though Lalafells can look like HD versions of them), Mithra were slightly more feral in most of their stances (hunched and ready to pounce. More cat-like faces, too) and Galka had massive arms, tails, short legs... basically, adorable.

You can say the same for FFXIV's races, except for the Mithra being more "feral" and Galka having tails. Are you implying that Elezen aren't elves but humans with elf ears? Because that's what basically an elf is.
It's actually pretty funny that you mention Tarus being onions while Lalas are often called potatoes.

I call them onions because of the Star Onions (also their hairstyle options). As for Elezen, they used to be their own thing, but then the male Au Ra came along and kinda shared their silhouette (much like how the female Au Ra share a sillhouette with Miqo'te. This was, or rather, still is my main dislike towards Au Ra and why I'm against the Viera. The female Viera will probably share a similar silhouette with the female Roegadyn, while the males will probably be a taller Miqo'te male silhouette.. Only difference being rabbit ears -and the lack of a tail). Roegadyn and Lalafells are currently the only races in XIV that look nothing like the others.

    Wait, what?

...Viera don't have the wide shoulders of either Roegadyn and Elezen. Nor the dense muscle-build that thickens the arms and legs. Viera have wider hips and longer limbs than Roes, and don't have the "small head, giraffe neck"-thing that Elezen have, while having the large, slender hands and feet that neither Roe nor Elezen have. If we go from the front, they are more gymnastic-athletic than Roe's heavy-worker muscular build (and if we are going to *winknudge* like Yoshi-p did about "tasteful" breast physics, then Viera boobs do not look like either Roegadame nor Ladyzen boobs either).

If the male Viera will match the female Viera, then they will be more lithe, slender, athletic and with long limbs, while being graceful (without Elezen lankiness). Since the high-heels are an evolutionary necessity, their feet, calves and thighs will probably be somewhat different as well.

The ears add a very big distinguishing point to the silhouette, and compared to the difference between Midlander, Miqo'te and female Au Ra, even without the ears, the silhouette would be a lot more unique (heck, probably at least if not more of a difference than between male Au Ra and Elezen).

Anyways, the "X looks like X" arguments are based upon body proportions, if you looked at the concept art of the ff14 Viera, they look incredibly similar to the Elezen proportion wise (And lmao, story wise). Saying "Roegadyn are just giant Lalafell" is just being ridiculous, you can't just upscale a Lalafell and make it look like a Roegadyn without loosing the Lalafell's body shape. Also Viera still have weird feet and claws which returns to the armor issue problem that folks love to bring up when talking about a playable beastmen.
