Voice Acting in HW. I forgot...

Put me down for another in the category that listens to the Japanese voices over the English. I'm firmly in the "subs only!" camp of the subs vs dubs debate, and I've been watching anime for 17 years that way* so I'm much more likely to recognize a Japanese VA than I am an English one. (Like, I'm about 50% certain than Derplander was voiced by Tetsuya Kakihara, who is also the voice of Prompto in XV.)

In regards to cutscene quality - Spoiler for 3.1:

I dare you to watch that Derplander vs Thancred battle and said that again with a straight face. Or the scene right when the priest is going to drop the little girl and is clearly having a mental breakdown - best use of expressions in any final fantasy game TO DATE EVER. That's the face that Kefka's 16 bit sprite WISHES it could have made.

* not counting another year that I watched dubs on Cartoon Network because I didn't have access to anything else

Man, I'm tired of seeing EN vs JP Dub, bad VA this and that. Just play the game and move on. Like them, don't like them. You have choices, use them.

Yeah yeah you can turn on the JP voice overs but come on... It takes away from the immersion.

I turn the JP voices on and pretend they're essentially speaking Simlish - I use the voice, tone level, urgency etc. as queues to the mood and personality while reading the dialog.

IMO, HW has the best EW voice acting in any game they've released since Dragons Quest VIII. I think it's very well done. Want to here some bad voice acting? Go play FFX for a bit... or the Dissidia games... or Xenogears (worst culprit of all, though there's so very little of it that it doesn't hurt.)

I like most of the VAs in HW.

Haurchefant's I liked more in 2.x. Same VA but in HW content he was told to talk faster and pitch his voice to be more excitable. In 2.x he had a low, honey slicked voice that made him sound like a serial killer. It fit better.

And then there's Aymeric's voice.

The thing about the English voice actors is that it's a very small pool that can be crawn from. It's why you hear the actor who did Spike Speigel in... everything else and TV commercials. Voice acting isn't anywhere near as popular here as it is in Japan where they're practically movie stars in their own right.

Voice actors are not a special subset of the "acting" class. It's real acting, and should be considered as such.

VA can make or break a scene so I wouldn't call it a small detail haha. Otherwise I agree.
