How would you feel about end-game gear only being useful for 3 months?

Oh...good I was getting tired of wearing these pants.

It is kind of funny how some people fly off the handle at a mere question, wether it's happening or not I don't see the issue with fleshing out how the system (If it ever happend) would be a good/bad idea.

Even with random threads like this it's good source material for the devs to ping off from, who knows maybe the idea will cross Yoshi's mind one day and the reps will come back and say that we hate the idea before he even gets around to telling us about it lol.

It would be naive to think the devs are not listening to the forums to gauge interest in ideas without even telling them to us, hell discovering maps through walking was posted long before Yoshi decided it would be a neat idea to toy around with.

So what, a post by the lead producer sparked an idea in someone's head who then decided to ask the community how they feel about it. What's so wrong about that?

And yet, instead of answering the question, which doesn't even hint at it being true, false, whatever, people decide to bicker and moan about how it's not going to happen that way. All you had to do was simply say, "I like it" or "I hate it" and maybe explain why. The same people that say YP's post was taken out of context are doing the same thing with the question at hand.

A bunch of hypocrites is all I see here. And this is why nearly every thread on here turns into a flame war, it's pathetic lol. Sometimes I'm just embarrassed to be a part of the FFXIV Forum community. Thank god the in game community does not resemble this, at least on my server.

Actually your question isn't nearly as innocent or simple as you make it out to be. I don't mean to personally attack you or anything Meowy - if I remember correctly we've agreed on many other topics in the past even. I just want to point out the presence of bias in your question. You inserted your personal fear into a question you tried to word objectively. What came as a result is a rhetorical question with an obvious answer at best.

Obvious answer is obvious. However, there was no suggestion that new gear would become useless after 3 months. No reason to believe this is even a probable scenario. New gear =/= better gear. We know this already.

Essentially you may as well have asked: Would you guys like it if Chocobos ran faster backward rather than forward?
Majority: Hell no! That makes no sense and would be exploited at the cost of immersion!

Obvious answer again, is obvious. The question is not really a question.

And I still think the question is something worth asking. It's been done in other games, and SE is trying to make FFXIV resemble other games. The possibility, although unlikely, is still there.

Developers making content easier down the road so more people who play the game can experience the game they also paid for, but don't want to put a whole lot of time in?

All I get from this is them saying they plan on adding new challenges while making the old challenges easier for people. You'll still have your super 1337 secret club of people who get an item first, and I'm sure that little trophy you bought yourself to show you were the first person to get a certain weapon will always be special...you'll just get to go after a new shiny item while the old crappy item will be given out to the peasants months later. Stop being so selfish with your virtual items.

Whether it's a day, a month, a year, a decade...whatever, they'll always make content more accessible to a wider audience.

I think rather than a question that is effectively rhetorical, isn't it better to make a thread in which people discuss their ideas for what a good future for content and new gear would be. Essentially what they hope for or expect from FFXIV. The devs can use this information much more effectively.

The way Azury worded the OP is that she wants an answer to that question - that's it. All I'm trying to say is an obvious answer doesn't tell the devs much. I'm worried she may have jumped to the conclusion that Yoshi somehow suggested gear becoming useless after 3 months and is asking this question considering that vague possibility as something probable. I've seen misinterpretations like this lead to large rumors and mass hysteria on these forums before.

There is no fault in asking a question.

There is also no fault in clearing the confusion when people start taking that question literally. One person may understand the theoretical nature of the question, but that doesn't mean everyone else will.

Following what NoctisUmbra said, to make things less restrictive, instead of asking a question that leads to a certain type of answer, a broader question may have been asked. Worded differently, OP could have questioned the "Quantity vs Quality" of gear, which would have opened up more avenues of discussions.

if gear actually does become obsolete every 3 months or so then id say its complete rubbish.

however, i also felt FFXI's gear stood around for a little too long.
i feel there should be a happy medium. Some gear can become obsolete every 6mo-1year while alot-if not most- gear is able to be upgraded to stay on par with new gear for 1year+.
it would take a lot of planning and implementation but it should make many people happy i think.

So who do I pay to play a MMO that requires skill and teamwork? Where my hard work isn't invalidated by John Doe who started the game 2 days ago but he "Payed" for the items as well so the game just hands them to him.

Who do I pay to get a game that revolves around what I feel is fun and not what another person thinks is fun. I don't think giving everyone easilly obtainable awesome gear is fun, I think thats lame.
