You mean aside from the excuse of, "This isn't XI."? XI is the only Final Fantasy that had Dragoons with pet wyverns. All other incarnations their gimmick was being a heavy damage jumper. That said, you're far enough in the story that you do have a wyvern pet, it's just the purest form of a pet in that it's just a pet.

The original Dragoon in FF2 had a wyvern, and Jump didn't show up until FF3's dragoon. Not that I think FFXIV needs a wyvern pet for dragoons by any means, but there is precedent besides FFXI.

I didn't know that. But then, not many do as FFII was never released in the US outside of the rerelease a couple years ago. Still, that's only two prior games out of... the dozen or so that had dragoons. Precedent, but a minority precedent with the standard dragoon being more a dragon slayer or heavy armor DD than a dragon compatriot. XIV's dragoon is a dragon slayer.
Heck, in XIV's Dragoon storyline the iconic initially tries to kill you but sets this animosity aside only because you're going to kill Nidhogg.

12 years ago! But yeah, dragoons usually do not have wyvern pets.

OP, I wanted a wyvern pet for the longest time too because I was really attached to mine on FFXI (I miss you, Jessie. ;_; ), but it would take a lot of rebalancing to even make it possible at this point. I think most people who career dragoon right now probably like it how it is. Maybe the next Final Fantasy MMO dragoon will have a partner in crime-fighting again.

I don't think you quite understand the number conventions of the early Final Fantasy titles. We never got the real II way back, the II that was released outside of Japan was actually IV, they numbered it II so US gamers wouldn't be confused and ask, "Where's II?" (not that it stopped Lucas from numbering the first Star Wars movie IV) The real II wasn't globally released until it was ported to... iPads? The wiki explains it better.

Append: Ah, right. Learned again. The price one pays when one skims.

No, I'm not confusing anything at all. I'm talking about the one called FF2 in Japan, which was re-released on Playstation in 2003 with Final Fantasy I in a package called Final Fantasy Origins. I remember it pretty clearly because it was released on my birthday that year (a few weeks before I graduated high school). If you Ctrl+F, you can find "Final Fantasy Origins" on the same wikipedia page you linked me.

Final Fantasy IV was released in 1991 in the US for SNES, and that's the game you think I'm confusing FFII with since it was named FFII here instead of FFIV.

(Also, FFIII on SNES in US is FFVI Japan -- Just a little more clarification.)
