    What causes the limitations?

So I keep hearing the main issue with why we can't have nice things (tackle box, new hairstyles, Au Ra horns separate from faces, etc) is because of a limit on character data.

But why are they so limited to begin with? Is it because of the engine the game was built on? Limitations within the server itself and the time needed to process transfers (I think Yoshi said every 15 seconds the info gets saved)?

My concern is there seems to be a point coming where the database or whatever it is will be at its breaking point and absolutely NOTHING else can be added.

Surely they've thought ahead about this game's long-term development. Is it just that it's built on an outdated foundation or what?

To a degree, yes. The game's still founded on a lot of 1.0's fundamental code. Limitations also arise due to the PS3 and other fundamental choices likely made in the rush to get the game rebuilt.

But there are some threads where people have asked for similar scenarios and dungeons that appeared in 1.0 - but are again told about limitations. It's like the game took out all of the chunks of code from 1.0 that people might have enjoyed.

The data limitation in which SE will claim is due to server synch. So the servers synch (save) every 15 seconds so in case of disconnects there is hardly any roll-back. They figure that if too much data is saved that often it will cause lag spikes or even server crashes. That is their stance in a nutshell.

because this is a remake of an mmo, the company uses tgheir own money to malke their gamkes and SE almost wenht banrupt twice with in thre past decade. They may not beable to afford the top end server structures, plus our characters and gear is pretty detailed we have inventory, crystal inventory, key item inventory, retainer invcetory. the capacity to be in 8 linshells and armory inventory.

thats alot of data per character more then any mmo according to the devs.

they spen over 1mil on 1.0, 1.0 updates, building 2.0, 2.0 updates building heavensward, during 1.0 era dealing with a tsunami earthquake and a near nuclear crisis whivch caused a power crisis during development. Had to stall many games to push ARR out in 2 years which is unheard of as even single player games can take up to 5 years.

    @ alahra

Thats not even true. Everything was rebuilt from the ground up, and even yoshida stated ps3 isn't limiting ff14, they only take ps3 tech into consideration for design choices. None of the 1.0 coding exists in ff14 now, its all on a new engine, everything was rebuilt and remade.
i forgot to add that, ff14 remake was a big reason most other SE games were hit with a delay they pulled alot of ppl from other games to develope ff14 from the ground up. they remade those items from the ground up, mostly due people still having them on their 1.0 character. I used to play 1.0, followed the dev cycle for the building of 2.0. May wanna go back to pre launch live letters and pre lauch letters from the producer they explained everything.

    woooblaaa

that would only be true if the game was built for ps3 first and ported to pc much like ff11. can we reply with facts and not hearsay?

This is more about design choices instead of limitations.

    • Proper physics for clothing, environments, hair, etc.
    • Physics playing a part in actual gameplay (this one was stated by Yoshida).
    • Raids like CT/ST not being disconnected by loading screens.
    • Towns/Cities not being split up, this could also apply to regions.
    • This one's just a guess, but mobs not appearing out of thin air, likely a PS3 limitation. Most obvious in Neverreap.
    • Giant 200+ metre flying creatures in FATEs, as stated by Yoshida.
    • An Afro that doesn't look like ass.

As for the why? Because it's running almost 10 year old hardware, not hard to figure out.

Don't forget that the memory limitations of the Ps3 mean things like the UI take a hit because they need to be able to show the same amount of information on both platforms (no PC/Ps4 advantage), this was actually brought up in relation to the issue with showing party TP and why they had to move UI elements around to accommodate the function.

Honestly there are a large number of issues stemming from Ps3 hardware and before someone comes in with the whole "But XI was on Ps2 etc etc"

XI was released on Ps2 before getting a PC release and was done early enough in the Ps2's lifetime that the devs were able to get a decent amount of mileage out of it before PC's and other MMOs on the market began to overtake it.

This was not the case with the Ps3 which was at the end of it's lifespan when it got a FFXIV release, preventing many major design additions and QoL fixes that are common or standard in most other MMOs on the market from being included.

For the rest there are significant server structure issues apparently preventing things like inventory (unless we buy retainers then they magically fix themselves somehow) and a variety of other features (cross server friendslist, in dungeon /tells) that are also near standard in many other modern MMOs.

I would also be willing to bet this is the reason we haven't received addon support yet either, because if they really plan to stop support for Ps3 around the time of 4.0 then they'll probably try to hold off as long as they can so they don't have to port them over.
