    They made a deliberate decision to reduce the game's memory load with regard to physics and also polygon count because of how demanding 1.0 was on average computer hardware, from what I understand. I don't think it's so much memory limitations as it is a decision to keep the game playable on more run of the mill PCs.

    Except on PC you can turn down the quality... Of course, there aren't that many options (like, say, Lotro with 8+ different quality presets, from Low to Extreme), but still...

    I get the decision -- somewhat -- but I'm not happy with that excuse, since there are other ways to solve that issue ^^;

    From what I understand, even on minimums, 1.0 was far more taxing on hardware than ARR/HW are on max settings. Yoshi talked a bit about it at some conference sometime in the year before the game relaunched. The lower the bar is, the more systems the game can run on--there's only so much you can do with scaling since there are just some things you *can't* turn off and have the game function.

    Advanced physics can be disabled though, as seen in many, many games. The only excuse is that the engine likely doesn't support it (yet), and they're not willing to invest time into making those changes. I do remember Yoshida stating that he wanted to implemented physics based gameplay similar to that found in Everquest Next though, but that wasn't possible due to the PS3. Maybe after it's dropped.

    The PS3 has a total of 512 MB RAM, 256 MB for CPU and 256 MB for GPU. It's absurdly low for a game like FFXIV.

    EDIT: And the recommended spec for computers is 4GB RAM. Just as a comparison.

    Right, but the PS3 version doesn't use an exact port of the PC version anyway--they made a number of other changes to make it work on that RAM. The PC version was still created in a way to make it available to a wide variety of hardware levels (4 GB isn't all that much RAM these days either, not for a dedicated gaming rig).

    It might be something we see in the future when the level of an "average" PC (in the minds of the developers anyway) has crept up some, since most MMOs do tend to improve graphics as they go. (There are some improvements in HW already, for instance). My only point was that one of the reasons we don't have it now doesn't have much to do with the PS3 but rather because they felt 1.0 was too taxing on common hardware. (The character models were much better in 1.0 and I wish we had them, I really do).

    This is what happens when you try to use hair physics.

    That stuff looks like crap on most computers. HDT physics can also make boobs and butts wiggle, and fluid Khajiit tails, but they move unnaturally and this is a video game, not a Pixar film.

    No, that's what happens when a modder toys with rather limited tool in their spare time to create something. This is what proper hair physics looks like (along with other physics).

    They've already partnered up with Nvidia for HBAO+, there's no reason they can't implement GameWorks technology into the game.

    How hard did you need to look to cherry pick that?

    A fan made mod for a old game...

    Regardless of what it looks like on some computers (most is a unknown metric you can't just spout off without backing it) it is a effect that can be turned off if required so we could get flowing physics on our character models for those of us who can support it, and turn it off for those who can't clipping be damned.

    Because hey now that the EU servers are being done that phat stack of cash-shop money needs to go somewhere right?
