Ah, I presume you mean 'The Keeper of the Seventh Gate' then... which seems to refer to the gate to the Seventh Hell, the deepest part of the.. um.. Seven Hells of Hydaelyn's underworld. Incidentally, a boss battle track from the version 1.0 soundtrack (by Nobuo Uematsu) is called The Seventh Gate (it was used mostly for solo quest battles), and in the lyrics for Titan's theme Under the Weight, you can hear Ferne shouting (amongst other things), "I'll drag you right down to the Seventh Gate!"

Although nothing is known for certainty, if I was a betting cat, I'd say 'Seventh Gate'/'Seventh Hell' is basically an Eorzean euphemism for Hell/Limbo/generic place of evil used when cussing, which would definitely make sense in the context of Cid's exclamation.

I'm pretty sure the idea is not only damning someone to Hell in general, but to the Deepest pits therein. I'd need to dig around, but i think it's been said that scholars have actually gone and explored the void,

It would be good to see cutscenes like the one with Cid right after you meet the Emperor, he refernced a name I wanted to look up, but forgot it.

@OP: What would happen if you got a little bored with it and left off? Do you need to catch up before the next patch, or can you jump right back to your furthest progress?

I thought of that. That's why I was thinking something like every main story quest you complete, you get a title or certificate of some kind that saves your true story progress. Just pick up when you want.

I'd prefer a NG+ mode. Just start the story over again from the start, picking a different god and starting city with your current character.
