Looks like they just call it a small moon. Also noteworthy is that they don't call it Dalamud in Japanese. Something more like Dalagov (daragabu* technically).
Hey everybody!
I'm glad you are all getting into the story of Menphina and Dalamud (yes, the Japanese name (daragabu) is a bit different, but this was done on purpose and with the blessings of the lore-masters...but for reasons I cannot yet reveal, but will brought to light soon!). We love seeing the speculation flying about and can say that you're inching (ilming?) closer to the truth with every post. Just to let you know our lunar watchdog Dalamud is the lesser of the two satellites orbiting Hydaelyn and normally should be sma-- Ah, but I've said too much already.
Stay tuned for all the juicy goodness coming in patch 1.19!
Hmmm. Well, having 2 bodies changing size would means:
1-The way Damamud is orbiting Menphina changed from a vertical orboting to a horizontal one, now instead of moving around it start moving in the front/back of it. This change wouls be specially important if they're planning some kind of eclipse between both moons. Dalamud getting behind Menphina would cause it to glow red, while Dalamud in the front would actually make it look like an eye.
2- Dalamud got closer to the planet. But for this to happen it actually won't be a natural satellite...because if such big body get too close it would enter the gravitional field and fall...unless it does is a ship or something.
3- Just like 2, Menphina can get farer from planet.
But the thing is...if the pic is correct then why is Menphina smaller than Dalamud and still in front of it? Or would this just be a triple eclipse? Supposedly if you align the 3 bodies its possible to look like that, with Menphina looking red due Dalamud glow and Dalamud itself looking dark due all sunlight being blocked.
Also...moon eclipse looking like an eye...did anyone say halloween?
Mind is blown.
As long as we have confirmation that the art is correct, the localization is as intended, and all is right where it should be - we can wait for some answers. I, for one, am going to marinate in the realization that I'm actually excited to see how a storyline develops in FFXIV. Despite how great the lore is and how high the potential hovers, the stories themselves have been a little disconnected, aimless, and seemingly without purpose until recently.
Thanks for stopping by and giving us a nudge in the right direction!
o0o0o... now we're getting somewhere. However, if the two celestial bodies in that image are Dalamud and Menphina, and the correct one is red, there's no way around it. Either Dalamud is gaining mass, or Menphina is losing it.
What gets me is that now the promo image takes on a whole new meaning. It's like the marmot is holding up the earring, looking at the moons, and going, "Well... this ain't right... /headscratch"

Well...there is another possibility...it can be Dalamud, but the smaller one not be Menphina...being something that is orbiting Dalamud...a 3rd moon...because after all Menphina would be white, not black.
Still, the hint Ferne left does point to it as being Menphina so...
Oh boy, this is getting good.
I'm not going to retract anything I said before, but I thought you could use another nudge, as it seems my first attempt was more of a sharp thrust in the kidney. I had a second talk with the lore-masters about the artwork, and after several bouts of poking, prodding, and pleading, they finally broke and here's what they told me I could tell you: the smaller moon with the mysterious "appendages" is, in fact, Dalamud. The reason it is not red, as it has been noted as being in several quests, is supposedly because it is partially shadowed. So, to answer the 100,000 gil question--there is nothing wrong with the art, with the matter of "hue" being left open to interpretation.
I know that doesn't answer all of your questions, but I hope it helps a little! Keep the discussion alive!
Now, I've got to get back to work! Ulp!
Oh, and great pics Jinrya-Geki!
So The moon will crash into Gridania causing it's zone to change.
The red moon makes the the Ama'jaal attack Ul'dah.
Who knows what's going on to Limsa.
I can't help wondering if the reason Dalamud went red is because of the meteor shower. We know that on Eorzea, this shower caused a lot of Bombards to pop up out of the meteorite remains.
Now that was ok for us, because we had skimpy adventurers revel in incinerating them with a massive summer festival.
There are no adventurers (or cascadiers) on the surface of Dalamud. So it stands to reason the Bombards may have reached incineration point and burned Dalamud Red.
If Menphina was also struck by the meteorite shower, she would face the same fate, albeit slower since there is a greater surface for the Bombards to cover. Will she also turn red soon...?
