It's all totally random but I seemed to get more from items with STR or DEX or Crit or Det on them.

Hey OP, it's not totally random, what Ruri said next is more accurate. Gear that has crit/det on them have a chance to drop savage aim/might materia along with whatever the other stats are. Example an armor with str/vit/crit can drop str/vit/crit and elemental materia. All DoW/DoM can drop elemental materia. Craft/gather gear drops their respective materia no elemental. actually it doesn't matter if the DoW item has crit/skillspeed/accuracy/det, it will still drop those materia; DoM also can drop crit/spellspeed/accuracy/det regardless of if it has those stats or not. The stats on the item are irrelevant to the materia. The only thing that matters is the classes that can equip it.
