Green. Because of the meeaning of the color itself.
Green always means good, OK, go ahead, etc.
Yellow should be when you are a bit above optimale level...since it means "caution". Probably best when the gear is 5 levels or less above your level.
Red should be for gear over 5 levels above your level since it often means "danger"
And the gray for gear over 6 levels under your levels sounds good enough to me, just showing people that is about time to ghange that armor.
Green means Go!
Yellow means Caution.
Red means No!
Simple and non-confusing.

I think it should be green because it means you made the level u need to wear the gear.... green means go!
