Gear design is difficult. If you try to make gear largely gender-neutral (like 99% of the gear we have now) you'll get people who complain that the gear looks too masculine or too feminine depending on the inherent design of the equipment. If you make the male and female versions different, you'll again stir up the ire of people who feel like their gender got stuck with the "wrong" version or otherwise express the desire to wear the opposite gender's outfit because they like that one more.

I'm of the opinion that SE should continue attempting to design the equipment as gender-neutral as possible and if there needs to be gender variations they should be minor. Or maybe I should clarify and say items specifically meant for glamour should have wide variations between genders (and they need to stop gender-locking the female equivalent) and actual DoW/M/L/H equipment should continue to be relatively neutral the way it's always been.

Anyway, back on topic, I think the OP's problem stems from robes and gowns not being very masculine in general. Powerful men have worn robes throughout human history, but a robe isn't the type of garment one would usually associate with masculinity at a glance. Unfortunately for the OP, mage and scholarly-type characters tend to be heavily associated with wearing robes and gowns in popular culture. Even in the Final Fantasy series the caster and healer characters almost always wear robes and long coats. I don't think something so easily iconic will be going away any time soon so you might want to get clever with your glamouring.

My only problem with those is that the feminine version is gender locked while the masculine equivalent is not.
