Quest Hubs, yes. It sends you to various part of the world, tells you lore, and gives u exp, in all it gives people incentives to actually goes to areas that has never been explored and yet there are people that are so against quest-hubs, when we all know there are one thing we've in common (for most people).. no one will do something without an incentives/rewards.. same thing, most people will probably not go through CoP if it didn't have sea access as reward because it was just too much of a hassle.

edit: also didnt wow then redesign the entire world in cataclysm and remake a bunch of the quests and stuff?
I played WoW quite abit late so i dont know if the contents was never instanced before, but the instanced raids are one of the best content because there are alot of creative things when you are in an instances, the limit is up to the developer's mind.

In an open world content, there are alot things they need to reconsider especially in a heavy game like FFXIV. How popular this NM is going to be ? How will this effect the congestion ? How many players will it takes before the zone crash? yada yada, There are just too many limitations imo.

Never played CATA, i think they made it more friendly for the newcomer but i think the endgame content wasnt very well received, dont quote me on this however.

see thats WoW's solution. If FFXIV was like that i think it would be great. But instead our quests are like "go 10 sec away from this leve, kill 2 things in 1 shot each, get less gil than you would have made running outside and killing marmots"

my main issue is that there is no incentive in FFXIV to actually experience the game and notice all the things the devs spent time on. And FFXIV doesn't have enough content or direction to excel anywhere else. Its not like our raids are some unique feature. Compared to normal SW TOR quests they are a joke. So where is FFXIV going to win? Right now can you name a single announced thing that you think would make FFXIV special to reviewers?
