It commonly takes people several hundred runs of Dragon's Neck to get Terra Branford cards. Does that make Triple Triad not a minigame? Time investment/"work" does not mean it's not a minigame.
I think people tend to bristle at the term "minigame" as if that meant it were not meant to be taken seriously.

Of course it is part of the game, but it's not an alternative to PVE, which is the core of the game. You can't access the PVP without doing PVE to level 30 to unlock Wolves' Den, and after that you have to level up in PVE to 50 to be able to unlock Frontlines. You can't access PVP at level 1 and PVP your way to level 60. Thus it is by all definitions a minigame, whether people like that term or not. You cannot jump into the game from level 1, ignore PVE, and just play PVP (like you can in GW2, where PVP is not a minigame, it is very much so an alternative to PVE with a fully developed progression system.)

You're right, something's not right. I can point out several:

    1) You likely are not recalling correctly about how the AST handled their HP. 10% to 100% is only marginally possible once; Essential Dignity. After that, all they have is Lightspeed + Benefic II which at best, probably heals them back up 40-50% HP every other second, and then Swiftcast, same thing, except once. Instant Noct shields heal very little HP at a time, and even with the shield, should not be enough.

    2) There was actually another healer off to the side you might have missed.

    3) Again, if you have that many DPS on a single AST and it isn't dying, I question the competency of your teammates. If the AST was sprinting away, I imagine the melee were useless if nobody stunned it. At which point, it should have melted.

Hell! I used my LB even when they're at 60% of their HP and I use buffs and bind them and most of the time they survive for some reason. I know I'm not wearing PvP gear and I'm only rank 36, but I still have high stats regardless with over 950 on attack power. Though there are times I can instantly KO someone from 100% to 0%... usually WHM, SCH, MCH, NIN, and DRG.
Melee LB is so slow that even if I was @ 60% HP, I could top myself off (or shield) if I'm not stunned, survive the LB with 20%ish HP (I stack VIT gear, if you hate getting 1-shotted, you should too), then heal back from that. You're only instant killing people with the LB from 100% to 0% if they haven't figured out that they need VIT to get their HP past a certain value to avoid that.

I'm going to have to agree with the person who says you may be lacking situational awareness in PvP. Don't take it as an insult, but the experiences you're sharing are showing this.

They could get it in the first run. RNG.

If I instantly got level 50, or 2-3 levels per pvp match or not anything that would be fine with me. At least its inconsistent and I could get lucky and get it it done.

Imagine every PvP match you got a slot with 4 numbers. Getting up to max level doing one PvP match would be awesome!
