They were talking about Samurai before as tank but they didn't put it in cause of Ninja being new with the Japanese theme.
Samurai will be one cool tank.

SAM > Heal
BLU > Tank
RDM > DPS
There you go.
Worked remarkably well in FFXI, actually. I wouldn't mind seeing it again to add some variety to the tanking jobs.
As for SAM healing, well, XIV could always DNC it up and make them melee DDs with the capacity for healing. Not that I see it happening, but hey, it's kinda remotely possible in some weird alternate universe. I'd rather them just have a DNC do that, though.

Hybrids in the trinity never did well historically. The shaman in World of Warcraft was a hybrid class once upon a time, but was later redesigned so that it must strictly focus into DD or heals. Instead, they should experiment with adding new roles into the game and divvying up the party responsibilities a bit more between them.
The only way I see Red Mage working while staying true to it's roots is:
- DPS, melee/caster hybrid.
- Uses both TP and MP, alternating between melee and magic while the other recharges.
- En-spells are stances; one buffs melee damage and regens MP, the other buffs magic and regens TP (and swaps STR with INT and skillspeed with spellspeed).
- Has one or two Clemency-like heals, not anything that can replace a real healer but useful utility.
- Has Refresh. Because.
As for Blue Mage... there is a precedent of them needing to be hit with attacks to learn them, so one could see a tank that builds up stacks upon taking (or blocking/parrying) hits that can then be spent on Blue Magic skills.

Strago only needed to SEE the spells. And Relm using sketch/control or Gau's rages could teach him.
No need to get so defensive. I only said that the class has required getting hit in the past, not that that's the defining feature.
Summoner summons Hydaelyn confirmed.
