It worked in FFXI. You would be able to learn certain spells at certain levels. Your artifact job armor would help you learn spells. The enemy would have to cast the spell to learn it. If your magic skill was high, you could learn it. There was some RNG to the system in that game.

My fondest memories playing blue was having to ally with 12 other players to learn some skills from incredibly tough monsters.

I cant wait to play Red Mage my fave job of all jobs throughout FF series. Even though I doubt itd be anything like XI's red mage - I do expect that it will be a black(or ACN)/white cross-over with a stance switch-a-roo... so probably playing similar to SCH which I currently play XD

There were already comments made from Yoshida himself on one of those interviews he recently did where I denounced any rumors of a new job coming within 3.0's lifetime. He explained they dev team was very busy and did not have the time to accomplish that within the 3.0 series of patches. Perhaps 4.0 but not 3.0.
