Go to settings under your profile and uncheck the box to show avatars, signatures, or images. One of those should work for you. Just because you don't like staring at it, don't ruin it for the rest of us.

EDIT: Unchecked show signatures and you're done. Just tested it.

I wouldn't really want to be playing the same game all over again. There's a few things that bothered me about FFXI. But I would like to see this game become as lively and successful as XI was. I loved the game during it's prime and would love to go through it again.
Here's to hoping PS3 release will make the game bigger.
