Or as Fyodor Dostoevsky phrased the concept in fiction (Notes From Underground), "spontaneous men of action" vs "acutely conscious mice." An idea he built on the French idea of "l'homme de la nature et la verite" or roughly "man of nature and truth" which was a common theme in French philosophy for a time. Dweck's formal approach deserves recognition, but I think it's worth considering that the basic principles have been around for quite some time; it seems to be pretty normal to human nature.
