Dweck's formal approach deserves recognition, but I think it's worth considering that the basic principles have been around for quite some time; it seems to be pretty normal to human nature.

What was I even saying? I agree I think...

Associating roles with ideal or cookie cutter personality types isn't really a good thing to do, and isn't accurate. Especially in a game where you can play all roles.

You can be a peaceful, helpful, good DPS who puts out big numbers or a loudmouth, obnoxious but good healer. Expecting people's personalities to change just because they click a button to switch jobs isn't realistic.

People should be as helpful and friendly as a healer as they are in other roles.

It's just way more obvious when a tank isn't any good. Lost aggro, squishy because no cd's, etc.

Bad DPS just leads to things dying slowly, unless they're facepulling or something.

Calling others bad is just a sign that you lack a sense of self accomplishment. If you get called bad, don't worry about it much. Maybe there is room to improve but the person calling you bad has their own issues. It's a team effort and we should try to work together instead of tearing each other down. Have patience and an open mind. I hope your experiences improve in the future

I am a great WHM, and I just don't say this, I don't really have a big head or anything XD Several of my fellow players have told me I am. I have had one bad experience in a dungeon though which id like to share. I was really just beginning a year ago (the second time as I did played 1.0 for a year then quit, played the beta, didn't start right away afterwards. I waited a while then came back a few months ago and love it! ) and I was doing my HM dungeons to unlock my daily. I can not look the dungeon name up atm as I am at work but it was the boss where the floor walkway has flames on it at times. It was my 1st time in there and the Tank wanted to burn the boss and speed run through the dungeon. I was geared well enough to be in that dungeon the normal way easily, but I did not have the gear, Mana or the cure potency to cure him though a speed run..

So during the dungeon the tank proceeds to tell me how incompetent I am as a healer, calling me names of god knows what kind. The tank was also partied up with one of DDs in the group, they didn't say anything just agreed with the tank like a lap dog.I did let the tank know what a rude jerk he was being, I never left the dungeon, we continued and did just fine once he started doing the dungeon the normal way, the way it was intended. At the end of the dungeon both DDs stayed behind and talked to me saying not to listen to him he was a jerk and his DD friend even apologized about it saying it was not right and was ignorant of him to do what he did. Moral is no matter how good you are there is some people in the game that are just ignorant, and you can not please them. It does make you wonder if they beat their dog or girlfriend in RL!Just keep your head up like the OP said and play your game, let the haters and elitist booty holes go do something to themselves XD

    I've been called bad before.

All the ones who called me bad, I've outprogressed in content. They're sitting in linkshells telling me what their friends say about A1S while I'm progressing in A3S. Yeah, I'm the bad one. Okay.

I think the matter is not whether your terrible or pro, but the judgement of someone that deems you as "terrible" to their standards. You can be someone who has cleared Titan Ex many times by following a strat that you have usually done to complete it, but then out comes Mr. Basket-of-Sunshine-and-Rainbows and tells you you're doing it wrong and says things like "you suck" or "git gud scrub" and then proceeds to attempt to kick you. You're not terrible, you just do things a different way (and it works), and it's rather appalling how frequent these negative collisions of point-of-views happen (events that I personally witness via ingame and in the forums).

It's difficult to do content with the fear of doing something that doesn't meet up to someone's standards, cause, c'mon people, let's be real, rarely anyone explains a game plan in the beginning of a fight if there is no one new. Ideally it's helpful, but nowadays people are like impatient sugar-high children that fidget just by waiting for healers to prebuff the party. I'm usually a people pleaser, so I go with the flow and adapt. I rarely get attacked for my mistakes, but when I do I get the feeling that OP had mentioned, I feel like just quitting.

I like the OP's incentive to inspire everyone to keep going and to not be discouraged in playing the game at your own pace and play to make you happy and enjoyable. Be wary of your words and know that the people shape a community. If you feel the need to be all you can be, then by all means go for it, but don't call out on someone that they aren't to your video game standards and make them feel utterly terrible about themselves. I'd like this to be kept as a video game, not a customer service job or boot camp.
