I get that part, it's just that the symbology (blue background circle w/! at the fight location) I had never seen before... it was not at all like how FATEs seem to normally be displayed... either via a big blue circle on the map OR an actual FATE quest giver NPC that you first have to interact with (both showing the purple FATE badge).

Also doesn't explain why the original quest/daily giver went to a red tinged overhead mark, indicating some reason why one can NOT pick up said quest.

Ah, the conjoining of quest area and FATEs... makes me sad! Because I play mostly during the day, many is the time nobody else is doing anything with the FATE, so I can "feel" all those angry eyes on me! Not so much an issue when one needs to level sync, but still... more mobs than usual that can be inadvertently drawn in.

Yeah, when I DID have the chance, he was very tough... but I kept whittling him down ever so slowly (sleep, heal, damage, sleep, heal damage)... I think to about quarter health... but it was the additional mobs that got kinda pulled into the fight that eventually wasted me. Next time, I'll mini-kite him into the center of that passageway first, I can dodge back and forth without ever getting close to the open areas (hopefully).

The reason this happens is because the quest requires you to bring back an item drop from that FATE. So until you have the item the icon remains red, meaning you can't complete it. Once you have the item it will turn green.

The other reason for the icon on the FATE, is the type of FATE. The ! is a boss FATE, kill enemy FATE will be indicated by an axe, lance, sword that are crossed, defense FATE is a castle rook, gather items FATE is a satchel, and escort FATE is a shield.

The blueish exclamation mark only shows you where the according fate will spawn eventually. You'll encounter those marks when unlocking the Crystal Tower-raid, too.

tyi: You may not know that you can get the Fate-drops always, although you're not having the quests right now.
If you're starting with a beasttribe you can look at http://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wi...d_Daily_Quests for example, search for "Fate" and do those whenever your stumbling over them.

Don't get to much though, it's random if you get the quest often enugh to spend all items. I had to throw away at least 10 fate-items (across all beastrtribes) when I was done with the tribes. -.- ^^
