Tough call. Recommending this game honestly is kind of impossible (for me). I always find myself making excuses for the game when I bring it up to friends that know what MMOs are and play or have played them. Now I just keep it simple and say "It's getting there I think..."
If I had to pick a point in time where I would encourage someone to even try it for a week or two it would be post 1.20 maybe even post 1.21 if some important things slip over to that patch.

You could just let them know the game exists, and leave it up to them if they wanna play it or not. If they don't want to, no big deal. If you really want to spend time with them, well, autumn is like right around the corner... Take them on a picnic or hike in the woods or something. :P

Most of the people I know that were vaguely interested don't care enough to play before the PS3 release.
Doesn't matter what you tell them, as soon as they play it they'll most likely quit for good. Better off waiting until the games in a much much much much much much much much much... much better place before trying to convince anyone from the mainstream to play.
recommanding ffxiv?
it's like all my friends eat burger and fries, then I invite them to eat sushi, but it's a bad sushi.
Comprehend?
I haven't really recommended FFXIV to any of my friends. I told one of them I bought the game, and it was free to play, so he ended up buying it (he's a big FF fan). But before he did so, I made sure that he knew that the game was free to play for a reason - it isn't up to par yet with other MMOs, but they are working on it.
Whenever he makes comments about something in the game, I find myself constantly saying things like "Well, they are supposedly adding _____ and ____ later..." over and over. XD
yes i went off topic for a sec no worry lol that the point of the topic. How you get your friend to play if the battle system is slow lol there many reason why people wont play. I myself have to many wow friends and they would try ffxi/ffxiv but i know they would quit.
ontopic
But like i said in last topic i show them the game and let them play and see what race they can be. My friend who got me into FFXI said oh be a tarutaru black mage. I'm like ya ok i became a elvaan Warrior i guess he got a little piss about that lol. He also ask his friend to become a tarutaru black mage i don't know what his deal was with that. When i got a friend to play i let him see all the race, explain each race background story and the Jobs and how they work and such. He got in to the game and he play for a long time lol i quit and he was still playing around 2010. He got his brother to play the same way i got him to play.
I got my gf to play she was sick of seeing me play this game and thought it was lame she was a "WoW" player. She got into it and thought wow was lame at the point and FFXI was more fun for her.
So best way to get a person to play is let them play on your Char and show them how to fight and show them all the race and background story and how the game is all about. If they like it they would go and buy it if not then w/e noting more you can do about that
And the others saying that you wont tell them about ffxiv due to it not being fix then that your issue. I have a friend that saw me playing from Beta1 and he know all the issue and all the complain and the score of the game and he does not care. He knows the game going to be fix and he dieing to play the game. He waiting for ps3 now due to it delay so i guess he get the game fix but he would play now if he could.

No, those who won't recommend it to friends understand that if they don't like it, then they have no right to try and push the game on them. It's not our issue, it's our choice and theirs, it's fine that you went lengths to go and teach/help your friends through the game and get them to like it, but later on if they choose to leave because it fails to keep their interest long, then who are you to stop them? And the others saying that you wont tell them about ffxiv due to it not being fix then that your issue. I have a friend that saw me playing from Beta1 and he know all the issue and all the complain and the score of the game and he does not care.
