You meet him before steps of faith. Also he was well aware of the WoL's reputation
Estinien doesn't act as if he's met you before if you've not done DRG before Steps of Faith. Besides, we're famous enough he has to have heard about us by then, if only in passing, so him knowing of us is absolutely expected by that point.
Time for my favorite .gif ever.
... the 3.0 intro does show Derplander changing to DRG, and he's in the AF2 w/Brionac in promotional materials.
Then again, Derplander is just representative of our character... I don't think the Warrior of Light is canonically any class.

Oh I'm aware. But it was for the sake of humor. Hence the hashtag for all things that come from assembling random clues into a random answer. :PEstinien doesn't act as if he's met you before if you've not done DRG before Steps of Faith. Yeah, it's nice how he calls you the other Azure Dragoon too btw if you're a Dragoon at the time of the cutscene where he tells you it's time to take down niddy.
The thing is tho, is that now we aren't.. Azure Dragoons anymore. There's no eye to latch on to us. But then again we wern't anyways once the end of 2.0 happened, were we. Once middy formed his covenant with us, we were bound to him, not niddy. Hence why we make midgarsormer dragons now every time we use post 50 abilities.
What would we be called I wonder if not Azure Dragoons? Infact, we aren't much of dragoons at all really, seeing as we aren't getting more jump techniques. I wonder what exactly we are now o.o
We're still Dragoons, and regardless of everything, we're still Azure Dragoons. We're still chosen by The Eye. We were never bound to it. However Estinien let his guard down for but a moment when he claimed the second eye. This gave Nidhogg the chance he was waiting for.
If you do the Dragoon quest line to 60, They mainly act as if you're the only Azure Dragoon (notably saying it's an honor to fight along side THE Azure Dragoon, not AN Azure Dragoon.) In the FFXIV world, a Dragoon is merely a knight, who usually wields a lance, who harnesses to power of dragons to fight. Jump is merely a technique. Also, 5 more jump techniques would have been ridiculous to have, though if you pay attention, you will jump during Wheeling Thrust and Geirskogul.

What does that entail then if not being entangled with us while seperated from nidhogg. Because it can't mean the eye just looks at you and bam dragon powers forever and ever. From what I've seen in heavensward it would seem that the "azure" dragoon used the eye as a constant power source, which is what elevated us above normal dragoons.
and with said eye (or eyes) back in nidhogg's head, we should be without that power now. Which seems evident by how our new powers are taking on the forms of the midgarsormer.
You're right about the "jumps" tho lol. I didn't realize that. We do infact bounce around with wheeling thrust and geirs XD
*edit*
I had learned before infact that "dragoon" was simply the title given to people trained to combat dragons within a specific combat unit. Not people who were bound to the powers of dragons. Altho their armor is all forged from the bodies of dragons (maybe the eyes as well? or does that only count for the great wyrms and above in power?)

Either way, Azure Dragoon is really just a Title for the best Dragoon, and defacto leader of the Dragoons. Traditionally they were chosen by the leader of the enemy army, however, a there are other possible ways to choose the leader of the Dragoons. Part of the new Dragoon story deals with taming the Inner Dragon (Which supposedly everyone has, though all Ishgardians literally have one to deal with). Hustiene is as close to being an Azure Dragon as someone can get without actually being one, though through the story, she is forced to master new found powers.
One key thing to remember is all of the people of Ishgard have Dravanian Corruption because the Knights 12 and King Thordan consumed Ratatoskr. The WoL is the First and Only Azure Dragoon who is not Ishgardian. Azure Dragoons were also chosen by Nidhogg because they were powerful Vessels that he sought to take over and enthrall. They are chosen by Nidhogg not as people to fight the Dravanian hoard but as new bodies for him to possess should he be otherwise defeated. The reason why you are chosen as an Azure Dragoon remains a mystery to everyone though, but the most likely reason is just because you're the Warrior of Light and even Nidhogg recognizes your power, and eyes you as a thrall, not realizing you bare the blessing.
Keep in mind that we never possessed a dragon eye, and Estinien wasn't supposed to be carrying one either. The Eye is considered a relic of Ishgard and was to remain under key within the See. Estinien stole the eye in a failed attempt to lead Nidhogg away from Ishgard, if you'll remember. All that matters is that it "chose" us, meaning we and it resonated in some way when in close proximity, the sole step in selecting an Azure Dragoon.

Very true. Perhaps it works by awakening somethig in their blood, akin to being fed dragons blood, and that's what awakens them and makes them so strong as opposed to needing to have it around all the time to draw from its power? and that's how it has that ability to link with them and attempt to take them over?Keep in mind that we never possessed a dragon eye, and Estinien wasn't supposed to be carrying one either. Again tho, that leaves us with the question of why would it try bonding with us.
I have a though about the WoL, the entire concept of it. Why we're the only one of Hydalens chosen that's able to snuff out gods like they're jokes, even without a blessing of light. The arc bishops words of "what are you" really made me think.
Our blank origins, our coming into the game back in 1.0 knowing nothing about anything of this land and its people despite being full grown adults, our ability to copy any and every combat form and make it our own, our unatural abilities.
Makes me wonder if we aren't some kinda hyper powered clone made by some allags from the past. some DNA implanted in a lesser race of man until it matured, and would awaken to form a bloodline of people that Hydalen would HAVE to latch out to, that it would only be expected due to us being made ina way that we're hyper sensitive to her voice or something.
Or perhapse we're made by the hands of Hydalen herself, and its by her will alone that this world bends to us as we desire it to, following us even when it can't talk to us, warping the world around us to aid us, as we'd be an extension of her as opposed to someone she merely gifted with the echo (because we're kinda a step above all the other echo users. Like, alotta steps above them).
I dunno. Those are just thoughts that have been rollin around in my head.
