AFAIK they never allowed you to purchase any of the event items created specifically for 2.0+ with gil later on. It was exclusive to the 1.x event items.
I distinctly recall being able to purchase the first 2.0 summer bikinis on alts I didn't have when that holiday rolled around a second time. As far as I know, SE never said it wasn't meant to be a permanent thing. It was a clear design decision from the perspective of a player. All you're doing is trying to backtrack in justifying their really shady, f2p-style business tactic.

I have no issues with spending a couple of bucks to be able to get an event item that I missed out on. With most of the games I've played that had events with exclusive items/cards/what have you, if you missed out, you missed out and that was it. There were no other chances to get the exclusive event rewards. The fact that FFXIV even makes them available at all is, to me, worth the $3 or $5.
