in the above interview he was not talking about ff14 specifically but MMOs in general in the future. IMO i think he is spot on....but as far as ff14 is considered i think it will last AT LEAST 10 years. (yoshi has said in an interview wanted ff14 to last 10 years.) With that being said i think ff14 is going to be iconic- well it is now and i think it will be more so in the coming years. I mean its not even 2 years old yet.

If you look at the copyright is say's 2010-2015 that would mean 5 more years. But, if Yoshi-P was talking about 2.0 then that is roughly 8 years.

I believe he was talking about it ff14 overall. But tbh the thing that gives me the MOSt confidence in fF14's longevity is the fact that FF11( which is not as successful as ff14) last what almost a decade - hell its up and running now ( with updates too). So thats why I can confidently send 12.99 per month - cheap entertainment, well worth it, and good investment.

Tbh, you can say XI isn't as successful as XIV, but looking at it from another view, how it's been going for 13 years and managed to keep about 500k or so for a good amount of time and isn't a WoW clone (seeing as it came before WoW lol), while XIV is just like every other themepark clone in the last 10 years, but shinier(not to mention it's got about 500k-600k subs or so atm), I'd have to say XI is more successful in a way.

Um... copyrights can only be claimed up to that days date. In effect you cant copyright something you havnt made yet. So the dates are irrelevant to how long ffxiv will last.

I would absolutely love FFXIV to last for many years, though in my honest opinion i feel it lacks that longevity FFXI had (has) because it tries too hard to please gamers from other franchises. It doesnt draw you in and soak you in that unique FF experience (altho HW did do better than ARR). The feeling of it being a RPG is lost entirely to same rotation of skills in every encounter so theres no requirement to think and absorb what some of these beautiful dungeons could potentialy have offered. I do hope though that Yoshi can bring some if that magic back and I will be a subscriber til the curtains close.

If they want it to last 10 yrs then they need to think about attracting new players with their expansions instead of pandering to long time and current subscribers. There is alway going to be attrition when an mmo ages and it seems like they have no plans to replace those subs.

and 10 years in the same game world is a very, very long time.
There is only one game that has done it in my experience. EVE Online and they did it because they kept graphics and animations up to date. Even still, after 10 years I can only handle it for 3 month spurts.

My EVE Main 2005 was a thumbnail that looked like this,

Now she walks around a captains quarters looking like this,

Not to mention the ships all got updates, stations and so on.

FF14 can be here in 10 years but they need to be always on top of the latest graphics. The advantage FF14 has is, they can make an HD variation and sell it for $50. EVE Online gave that stuff away.

Yoshi recently mentioned a ps4 graphics update in the works
