This is true, but it is a rather clunky system. If I wanted a specific gear piece to be pure white this would be the first thing I'd think to do, but if I already had the base piece dyed with say, a cash shop dye that I wanted to keep for future use, the only way to remedy this situation is to buy another of that exact same gear piece just to store the dye. Which makes less sense the more expensive the particular gear piece is. I've already got three or four hempen camises stuck back on a retainer to store dyes, if it was something like the thav. set, I'd have to decide which one to keep and which one I wouldn't have quite as hard of a time parting with.
