I always commend friendly, chatty people regardless of role, and generally default to commending miqo'te in quiet groups ever since everyone switched to au'ra. I don't tend to commend healers unless I notice that people are taking a lot of unnecessary damage. Whether or not they DPS doesn't tend to impact things much (though honestly I probably commend healers that focus on DPS less often since in my experience in DF, they slip up and people die a little more often, which makes the run less smooth).

Edit: And I give commendations to new players most every time I'm paired with one.

As far as handing out comms to healers, I don't honestly tend to give them out in that direction unless the healer really stands out to me for some reason. It depends what my mood is, I have given them out before because I liked the person's name or their glamors or they were funny or nice to others. But most of the time unless I'm the healer, I don't honestly pay that much attention to the healer's dps. I just assume that dps is a part of their job, and if for whatever reason they choose not to dps that's fine with me too as long as they keep the party healed, which is the most important part of their job. I will notice their performance though if things get rocky, and if we have a quick recovery or everyone manages to stay alive then I'll almost definitely throw the healer a commendation, especially if I feel like part of the situation was me being a big ol' derp.

I also try and commend new healers and new tanks, really new players in general but especially the healers and tanks because they're often given a hard time in df, and most of the time they're far from terrible, just inexperienced, so I like to try and encourage those guys. I'm still in the slooow process of leveling my whm, but I don't put a whole lot of thought into getting commendations or not getting them, and when I do get them the only thing it tells me is that I stood out to that person for some reason. I'll never know why, so why think that deeply into it?

ah commendations as a healer i don't normally give them out (normally I forget) I don't get why people even want commendations, but my criteria for the commendations i do remember or are inspired to give out are:
    1. good attitude
    2. good at playing their class (generally, tanks holding aggro etc, healers keeping everyone alive and dpsing when I'm not playing one, dpses, just playing their class and racking up the damage numbers
    3. people explaining mechanics and being patient with new players

You can't expect people to notice micro, like cleric dancing, just whether the run is going fast and smooth or whether it's going slow or everyone's dead. And if they do notice, they may just feel that it's standard behavior for a healer to toss some dots up.

Generally though, you'll get a comm from the tank. Just like everyone else defaults giving him one he'll give you one. But hey, maybe sometimes he'll give it to a dps who bothered to explain fights to a new person or he doesn't give them out just for the sake of giving them out. He's not obligated to give them and you're not obligated to receive them. Not like the things are worth anything anyway so don't lose any sleep over it.

No one is obliged to give nor receive. Take it as a bonus. It's never about performance all the time.

Comms are more affected by behavior than performance, I can do the EX roulette, flawlessly heal and deal very respectable damage and get no comms, but generally being friendly, cracking some jokes or being helpful to new players tends to land me several, even as a DPS. Comms go out to the player that left the best impression, not the one who performed the best. Its an incentive to be a good sport.

Don't expect comms for doing your job, or you will get upset about getting none, getting them should be a nice surprise, not an expected result for running with pugs.

Also remember that you can only give out one, if everyone does a great job with a good attitude, you can still only give one.

I don't understand why commendations are such a big thing, or why people think it's needed. It's pretty much a vanity achievement imo.

Personally, the restart of the challenge log, I give it to whomever in guildhests. Whether I'm healing/dpsing/tanking I'm not paying attention enough to care. I just want exp.

When it comes to Expert/High level roulette. I run with 2 other people. So to us it's a game of who gets the commendation. There is no win or lose it's just all in good fun. I mean, I got a commendation on my SMN, from the tank, running Fractal for a friend's friend. And all I did was mention that it would be wiser to take it slow so the DRG in party could learn.

That being said, I've solo healed Titan HM with a "I gotta BRB in the middle of the fight, but really I just want to be carried and get loot" healer and gotten 1 commendation.

It is what it is, getting butthurt/upset/annoyed about it isn't going to change or get anyone more commendations.

Folks want commendations because they're attached to achiements.

That said, lately I've gotten more as a bard than as scholar.

Then again, I know how to sing, too... Might be part of it.

A lot will commend a Bard who knows their buffs. It's just such a rare thing where you don't have to specifically tell a Bard what song to play or they just want to play like an Archer DPS.

I main healer but have played more often than not as damage lately. And what surprised me was that I get the same amount of commendations on average on both roles. I am chatty to a point, try to explain the stuff to those who are new, and try to follow advice if I'm given any. And try to perform to best of my abilities. But yes, I think the thing that amouts the most is the rapport you build with the group. Be it on social side, or explaining side, being seen in the chat seems to be the most defining thing.

If you say 'pls' because it's shorter than 'please', I say 'no' because it's shorter than 'yes'.
